Some of the dog owners are themselves cruel, WHY don't they put muzzels on their dogs rather than subjecting them to all the pain when poisoned.

This solution is in the owners hands.

What a terrible way to end the year for these poor dogs and the owner.

I can't imagine how distressed they must be feeling.

A terrible way to see your beloved pets die.

Slimmer....please pass on my condolences to your neighbour.

Berilela, how awfully sad.

You say they were poisoned by Princess night club. I wonder, were they actually on the Princess property?

No excuse, I know. But last week, I saw a couple walking their dogs in Girne hospital car park. I do not think this is the right place to allow dogs to do their business.

Maybe if owners walked their dogs on leads, as is law in U.K and carried and used a pooper scooper

such terrible things wouldn't happen. I would never harm a dog but I have been knocked over by a large

boisterous one wearing a collar, my bones wont heal as quickly as they used to if they break. Good owners make for good safe dogs.

Msgs 6 and 8 - A muzzle DOES NOT always work as my lovely dog inhaled cyanide which was at the side of the road we were walking along, she never left my side and still died. So what do you suggest? That we keep our dogs at home all the time? I am so saddened that more and more of these beautiful dogs are dying at the behest of evil poisoners - commiserations to ALL who have lost pets this way.

What a terrible thing to happen to the poor dogs and the owners. Ok, maybe if you are walking your dog in this country, because of the poison factor,then use a muzzle, but surely you shouldn't have to. The root problem is people putting down poison, that is what should be stopped,not critizing people for not putting a muzzle on their dogs. What next, not letting children out to play, as in England, for fear of something happening to them.

Message 7 you said WHY should it be in the hands of the owners. Please tell me who else is responsible for the dog.

Message 13 agree with you the problem is people putting down poison until this awful practice ceases all the dog owners should ensure that their animals are as well protected as possible and if that means the dog has to wear a muzzle then so be it. Will the people who put the poison down stop this practice, I don't think so until maybe a dog of theirs is poisoned.

Message 12 sorry to hear about the way your dog died clearly the muzzle was no use but a muzzle must help in most cases.

I am quite sure that it is the goat man, he has poisoned many, many dogs in the area from the night clubs out to horse shoe beach. The hunters think its a great idea to dump their dogs out on the road towards Kayalar, do they realise that they will be dead within 2 or 3 days? Its devastating to see, on boxing day a party of hunters just drove off and left their beautiful dog outside our friends house in Kayalar, the poor thing sat there all afternoon waiting for them to come back, sad to say that its probably been poisoned now as it was in one of the areas where the goat man lets his goats graze.

I am very sorry for your friends poor dogs, its a terrible thing to witness, when will this government grow a set and take some action?

if you've spoken to him and know the score,why do you still allow your dogs into that trap?

He is just trying to protect his livelyhood,in the best way that he knows.

I understand that the man has to protect his livelyhood, but poisoning is indefensable and inexcusable. Just laying the poison down and walking a way to let some poor starving dog, who is there through no fault of its own become his latest victim... its cowardly and there is absolutely no excuse for that. He should be a man about it and shoot the damn dogs if he is sure they are after his goats, far less pain and suffering for the dog and at least he knows he is targetting the right dogs....people have dumped countless puppies on that road behind the night clubs and he poisons them without a second thought...a puppy for christ sake, what risk is that to his goat?

Just where are we supposed to walk our dogs? Muzzles are hardly the answer when some types of poison that is layed down will kill a dog just by being sniffed. Its been said many times but will it really take a childs death before action is taken by the government.

These things do happen in rural areas,hence fox hunting in uk!

Of course,bunch of dogooders that not live/lived in the rurals protesting against it without knowing how much damage they are cousing.

I'm sure 'you' also do not put down rat/mice poison because they are 'your' pets/animals.

ps.not trying to argue but stating some facts.

Fox Hunting...just an excuse for a load of people to go chasing through the countryside on horses with dogs...does nothing to actually reduce the population of foxes at all....not really affective when they spend hours chasing after one fox. I was never really pro or anti fox hunting, think its cruel, but really no relation at all to the devastating cruelty to animals who are poisoned here in Cyprus. Surely there must be a more humane way to deal with the situation, a start would be a ban to the general public on the poisons and a way to make hunters more accountable for their dogs, so that they are not issued with licences for their dogs unless they can show that they are using the same dog season after season (unless there is a very good reason otherwise). My husband is Cypriot, he hunts (something I am not delighted about), but he has had the same dogs for 5 years now, he looks after them well all year long and would never dream of dumping them because they dont perform well.

You hit the nail on the head!....................STAY AWAY FROM OTHER PEOPLES LIVELYHOOD/BREAD AND BUTTER.

ps.how many Cypriots living in UK do you see moaning and whinging about English way of living?

by the way,I don't hunt and I dont beleive in killing animals as a hobby.I also have lots of animals that inconsiderete neighbour's dogs keep disturbing.So,I know wery well what it is like to have your loved animals being life threatened.

{{{STAY AWAY FROM OTHER PEOPLES LIVELYHOOD/BREAD AND BUTTER}}}

And how would you suggest that dogs who have been dumped in the middle of no where do that????

{{{ps. how many Cypriots living in the UK do you see moaning and whinging about English way of living?}}

Are you kidding?? Quite a few actually, I know a lot who live in London and moan about the system, how its letting them down and that they cant wait to make enough money to come back here! And there are the ones who lived and worked in UK for 15 years, come back here and moan about the UK pension system constantly sending them forms to fill in about their current status etc.

I am always interested to see how quickly you go on the defense when any one dares to say any thing negative about living here, we moved here because we love the Island, love the people and the way of life, does that also mean that we have to love the way innocent animals are poisoned because they find themselves dumped by selfish owners??

And just for the record my Cypriot friends, husband and family all find it disgusting that this goat man is allowed to continue with the practice, even though he had been reported to the police on several occasions..they think it is a spineless way to go about protecting his flock and would no more defend his actions than they would go out and lay poison down themselves.

Thats not your problem,nor is the reason you had moved to live over here.All you need to worry is 'your' own ones like myself.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>defense<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Not at all!Just stating the facts of two different countries,having lived in both.

I have 3 dogs of my own,had 5 at one stage.Lost a beautiful dog (chihauhau) on xmas day,whom I slept with to a dog owned by neighbour,out of my garden.

I wont go ranting and raving about it on forum.Not your fault nor your problem or even the dogs that had got him out of my garden.

MT FAULT and I have the rest of my life to pay for it.

as for Cypriots in London moaning about the system,I'm more then sure of,there are enough English around, reminding them about 'nobody forced them to live there.Not to forget the fact that those so called 'Cypriots' living in UK are BRITISH which gives them the wright to critisise the system

Its not my problem, but if everyone turns a blind eye to it and says its not their problem then idiots like that goat man will be allowed to continue to poison these dogs...who is going to make it their problem and take action? certainly not the police and not the government.

Lilli;

The problem is not finding the poison,but who buys/owns the animals.Weather it'd be dogs or anything else.There are lots of other cruel ways of killing an animal,so by banning or restricting it you wont change anything.

Talk to the man,HELP HIM,he clearly needs it.

ps.just got another chihuahua Lilli,go on my facebook to see the pictures.

I love animals,they are mens best friends.even chickens,as much as my wife refers to them as 'vermins'.

Maybe the goat man could spread his meat out all the way along the main road to girne, and rid the island of strays for a few years then he will not need to protect his herd from wild dogs and the pets will be safe.

Cassius, he has bragged about his behaviour, local business owners know its is him and the police have admitted that they know he does it, do we need more evidence? Fosterscan, what a fantastic idea, hope he pops some in a sandwich for you whilst he is at it.

I think that the point I made is being missed here. Whatever the goat herder has done in the past is the past. How does anyone know that he is to blame for this latest incident. Dont get me wrong, I have my own dogs and the threat of poisoning worries me sick, but equally I do not like people being condemmed when there is nothing to prove it, one way or the other
