I am aiming to spend a week in Tatlisu approx Feb 10-17, and would be interested in joining a walking group on one or two days. (I'm an active member of the UK Ramblers Association. Nothing ambitious: 4-5 miles would be good...) Does anyone know if such walks are available then, please? Many thanks in advance! Maurice (Retired in Surrey, UK)

I found the walking in TRNC a bit of a let dow, mostly its on tarmac. You go 'of piste' at your peril, the high grounds are rightly under the control of the Arny, every bush has hidden thorns, and you have snakes to contend with in summer. Notwithstanding the above, there are many good walks. I would recommend the ridge route from the Kyrenia Dog sanctuary, passing five finger mountain on your left, Then joining the tarmac up to 'lovers leap' - very dramatic. About 6-7 miles round trip (circular routes are Far and few between), it is part of a 100+ mile ridge. The whole ridge is waymarked, thanks to the brits who have assisted in this. More details on this forum if you search. Enjoy.

I comprehensively disagree with msg 2. I have been walking most weeks for three years now. We have explored marked walks (of which there are hundreds), other persons' walks (of which there are hundreds more), and have made probably 40 or 50 of our own. Many are "loop" walks. Almost all of them are completely "off-piste". Have rarely been bothered by the army and as most are tracks thorns are seldom an issue. Snakes tend to hibernate during the season so haven't had much bother from them either. There are a number of books detailing some of the walks. Many overlap as a lot of them utilize the trails explored by the KKTC Mountain Sports Federation who previously laid down many excellent walks. Alternatively, it is really quite easy to attempt your own. There is enormous variety for such a small country (want an alternative to mountain walks try the coast, particularly the blasted sea-fort chain between Gaziveren and Yayla). In fact it's superb walking country. Enjoy!

I totally agree with Gordon, the walking here is fantastic, I have walked the whole length of the Besparmak Range right to the end of the Karpaz, the views are stunning and in the spring the flowers are unbelievable. There is a walk book called 'Walks in North Cyprus' which has 36 walks all over the North mostly under 10 kilometres. Will you have transport Maurice? I am quite happy to take you walking with me, I go a couple of times a week around the Bellapais/Esentepe area with my 3 muzzled dogs (due to the poison laid down for the foxes). If you are interested let me know. Sarah

Yes, I shall have a car! I'm just looking for a couple of walks that week, as I shall also want to do some sight-seeing. Thanks for the walk suggestion, but I'm afraid I'm somewhat nervous with dogs (been attacked). Thank you, John & Pipie - will take a look at the Sinya web site. Sissy, where does Josef have his nice restaurant?!

Hi Maurice, I'll email you with some pics we've taken on our recent walks up in the hills and mountains around Tatlisu. There are some amazing walks just waiting to be found and you're welcome to join us when you come over. We did a lovely walk which goes up into the mountains and ends up just above the village! It is only about 4k but up some quite steep terrain and took us about 3 hours door to door with a couple of drink stops and plenty of scenery viewing stops!
