Division may happen in 2011, but of course neither side want to be the one to be seen to ultimately end the talks. A lot could hinge on the outcome of the 'Cyprus Files report' which was reported on another popular forum which produces daily news updates. As for 'recognition' I would expect that to still then be some time away. Direct flights can't happen until sovereignty is recognised by the charter members, that will be many many years. From partition to global (even minority) recognition, 10 years+ would not be unrealistic I would think.

Direct flights, emargoes to be lifted. All fraudulent mortgages will be lifted and declared illegal. All unfinished properties will be completed. Anyone 'conned' will be compensated. TRNC will be recognised. All rogue builders will be prosecuted. Nepotism will be banned. The tooth fairy will visit every child. Father Christmas does exist. 80,000 tourists will visit the North. All news will be good. Yeh yeh yeh

I heard from a unconfirmed source, who wished to remain nameless, and was not prepared to commit anything in writing that Shayna are going to run their establish for the benefit of the customers and not the owners, or was this just a rumour started by someone on another bulletin board? Michael

Direct flights don't need to wait till recognition, although they would imply recognition. We don't have direct flights because Turkey won't open its ports. And why doesn't Turkey open its ports? Because we don't have direct flights! A catch 22 situation, with neither side willing to concede first and be seen to be "giving in". Both sides say they are willing, but are not prepared to be first. I wonder if they have considered a simultaneous announcement so that neither side loses face. From the legal point of view, there is no very little stopping direct flights. The RoC is recognised as the legitimate government, and the Chicago Convention gives them the sole right to designate international airports, so the non-recognition of the TRNC per se doesn't have to prevent direct flights.

Can't see the UNSC revoking its binding resolutions on Cyprus nor any of its members taking unilateral action. So recognition would have to come from outside, but no country is keen to do it.

mess 13 "The RoC is recognised as the legitimate government, and the Chicago Convention gives them the sole right to designate international airports, so the non-recognition of the TRNC per se doesn't have to prevent direct flights" So there you have it - no direct flights - not now, not never............... The GC's hold ALL the cards - there is nothing the TRNC has that the south wants................. They are just stringing the TRNC along................

msg 17 "The GC's hold ALL the cards - there is nothing the TRNC has that the south wants..." There is plenty the TRNC has that the GCs want: Land, property and a return to Kyrenia. The TRNC also has TR troops and TR settlers - the GCs want them - out.

Much as i hate saying it the outcome for Cyprus north or south depends entirely on what UNCLE SAM and to a much lesser extent the British want. At the moment division suits their purposes perfectly despite all the comments supporting the talks and reunification What the RoC TRNC Turkey Greece EU UN or indeed the Cypriots themselves want is neither here nor there and the sooner everyone accepts that fact the better everyone will be
