I was watching a programme the other night, it involved a sexual attack ,other people using really bad language, others fighting, and when a man light up a cigarette, they put a fuzzy blob over the cigarette so you couldn't actually see the cigarette. Now that's crazy.

| I buy Tobacco in Oz, a packet of Champion Ruby 50 gram, cost me 50.00 lira, and there is talk about prices going up again, it still doesn't stop people from smoking, but I can buy 5 packets (250 grams) at the airport for 38.00 lira, just shows the amount the government receives in tax from Tobacco. | It's ironic isn't it, it's 'bad news' for smoker because the price has gone up a little. To put this into perspective, lets list the diseases that smoking can cause, and then see what the real 'bad news' is. And remember for those who smoke around their own kids, or let other people it's the same bad news for them too, only not self inflicted. Never tried one myself, probably never will now, but can understand the addiction, I mean I love a bar of white chocolate! |

Think government taxes are bad here then, how to explain how a packet of cigarettes in the UK cost £7.99 and with the recent rise in VAT to 20% in UK, who knows what they are going to cost!!!

Fantastic news. I vote for more tax on the filth. Make them pay more!! Cut tax on clean people, people who don't smell of a disgusting lingering tobacco oder. More tax on the brown fingered brigade.

Waddo - obviously a weak joke - after all, without petrol, you wouldn't get food delivered to supermarkets, or indeed any consumables - get to a Hospital quickly - public transport - so on and so forth - NO-ONE needs to smoke. A friend dropped off a Christmas present from another friend, to me - and as I opened the carrier bag - the smell of smoke actually brought my stomach up - although the present giver lady walks everywhere and is in her early seventies - she coughs 24/7 and at the moment, is battling an appalling cold - not helped by her smoking habit. She is so thin (eats very little, preferring a cigarette) you could read a newspaper through her; none of us are perfect, we all have our coping mechanisms, I am merely making the point, at this juncture, society relies on petrol - not one person on this planet NEEDS to smoke a cigarette..........

MsGarnet, Know what you mean, but why is it the smell (often more of a stench) lingers on some people and not others. I can never figure out, unless it depends of whether the person smokes inside and traps all the fumes, or outside. I've been sat in our house in the UK when a person comes to the front door, and no word of I lie, when the wife opened the front door, I could smell they were a smoker from the living room. Yet, I have been in the company of other smokers and you can't even detect that they smoke. But then a person has just walked into my office here and by the smell of things hasn't washed his clothes or arm pits for a few days, think I prefer the smell of smoke!

MsGarnet, No not a joke, weak or otherwise. I see it has given you the chance to put your point across most strongle, regardless of the feelsings of others so at least it did elicit a response that you obviously felt you needed to make. The title of the thread gave the good news you would have wished to hear but the person who posted it most probably meant it as information and not as a request for the smoking police to pounce on another thread and make their never ending point (flak jacket put on at this point) at the expense of smokers. My point was - sadly misswed - that all things go up in price and that some have more effect on people than others. The question is, when petrol goes up in price do you stop driving or take the public transport or heaven forbid, walk? After all by reducing the emissions yourself you make your air better to breathe and the world safer for everyone - or is it only smokers you wish to get rid of? By the way - I know I have lost the argument!

Crikey, that's cheap. Incidentally, for those who do smoke and maybe consider flying through LCA, apparently, and there are posters up there to tell you this, you can take 2,000 cigs tax free between EU countries. With the saving, this could pay for the taxi fair to LCA so factor this into your travel calculations.
