Just a thought - it might be helpful if you said what your definition of a traditional Cypriot Sunday lunch would be, then people could give you feedback and let you know if they would be interested or not.

i have a few ideas about the menu but havent decided for sure yet. kleftico with mezes is one of the options, traditionally cooked chicken in owen is another. i also have a few more ideas for the menu but i will think and make sure in a few days and post on this thread.

I personally would not travel from Karsiyaka across town for Kleftico as it is the one Cypriot thing that you can easily get here. I would however be interested in other traditional Cypriot food. For example, my friend's aunty cooks wonderful stuffed chicken (with rice, liver and fragrant spices), a superb spaghetti dish with (I think) ricotta cheese, dried mint and crispy crumbled hellim and lovely dishes with beans and pulses. It is this kind of Cypriot cuisine that I would travel for.

That sounds very nice joandjelly particularly the spaghetti dish, do you have any idea of its name?

i agree joandjelly thats why i didn't want to give too much information about the menu cause i will also speak to my mother about what we can do to get her idea as well and of course use her cooking skills as well

Sounds fantastic Fikri and we would love to come to your Sunday lunches and we live in Karsiyaka. We came a couple of weeks ago around 12pm for lunch and sadly you were not open. There was no sign on the door giving an indication of times that you are open. So we left hungry hehehe

That's great Fikri, definitely need all the Cypriot mums and aunties to share their recipes! Good luck and I look forward to hearing your menu in due course.

Pugwash I don't know what the spaghetti dish is called and have tried to find it on the internet to no avail. The lady who cooks the dish would love to open her own restaurant but feels she is too old to do that now. We are very lucky that every time our friend comes over from the UK we get taken to his various relatives and get fed wonderful traditional food.

janj, they call it macorini, not sure which dish you refer to but did you but the cpypriot cook book last year. Written by those lovely women from a village I cant remember, but was all to benefit varoius charities. I think they had a spaghetti dish in there. I will try to find it for you xxx I would love to try what you have mentioned x

Buy your chicken - legs and thighs are best - cook by boiling (add stock cube to water first) and save the stock. Cook macaroni in the chicken stock. Drain off some of the stock and save for later cooking. Deep fry cooked chicken till crispy and drain. Grate Helim into bottom of dish you will serve to person. Put cooked macaroni into dish, grate more Helim and mint over top of macaroni. Serve up with the fried/boiled chicken on a seperate dish. Can have a bit of salad and olives with this if not enough but have never been able to eat my way through a good sized serving. Bread (village) with not butter as well and make sure there is some stock in with the macaroni in the dish you serve up - it all makes a kind of sauce/soup. Add olive oil as you wish and stuff yourself for a very good meal at very little cost. mmmmmmmm

My mouth is watering at the thought. Can't wait to see the menu - and don't forget to let us know about price so there's no surprises. One menu, one price - no one can complain, easy for everyone

Hi Tanners Terrace

I agree with message 8 that just to offer kleftico or the usual meze dishes available everyday in most of the traditional restaurants everywhere will not have customers banging down your door. In the south there was a restaurant at the Famagusta Yacht Club in Limassol that offered a fabulous Sunday buffet serving several traditional starters and main courses, including the macaroni mentioned here finished with traditional deserts, they always did well with local cypriots and ex pats alike, all for a set price but the food was so good you did not eat for two days after ;))

Yes, also could you post your opening times here please as so many don't bother and just shut because it is winter time now.

thank you all for your comments which gave me a better idea about what to do. and as i spoke to my mum about it, she came up with an idea of a buffet with several traditional starters and main courses ended by traditional desserts as much as you can eat for a set price or i can give starter and main options then we serve them on your table so i started working on it. also i wont keep the same mains every week so there will be something different on the menu every week.

we start serving 11 o'clock in the morning and kitchen closing time is 22:30 all through the year. we close only first days of the bayram for half day and half day on new years day and apart from that we are always open. we dont shut anytime in winter as i have enough regular trade from locals. so juli you might have come on one of those days.

i will start this sunday and i will inform you about my menu today or tomorrow.

Hi Taners, that's a great idea, especially with the option to just choose starter and main course as opposed to 'eat as much as you can'. My mum eats very little so otherwise this would just be too costly so that's any idea for those with smaller appetites is good too.

Excellent news Fikri, can't wait to try it.

Waddo thanks for that recipe it sounds really good.

Lilli/Pugwash I do have the Cypriot cookbook but the recipe in there is not the one I have been looking for. My friend's aunty uses spaghetti rather than macaroni and it is not baked in the oven so is very juicy.
