We have been away for a while, but on returning to our Lapta flat, we discovered there was no electricity. On checking the fuse box under the building's stairs we discovered the fuse (for our flat) had been removed (stolen?). We thought at first it might have been a result of a misunderstanding with the electricity board over non-payment of bills. However, they informed us that all our payments were up-to-date and the removal of the fuse had nothing to do with them. They went on to say that the theft of fuses from unlocked cupboards was quite a regular occurrence. The cost of a new fuse is only about 20 or 30TL, but of course there is the hassle of having no electricity to consider, and in our case, the expense of losing the food in our freezer. My advice to others is to ensure that the main door of the apartment building is kept closed and/or the communal fuse box cupboard is kept locked.

there have been a few posts about this going back some time. Cut a window for the Kibtec man to read the dials, fit a piece of clear plastic, or if the door is very close to the dials the small hole will be good enough, and fit a descent lock to the cupboard. Problem yok.

I learned that lesson some time ago after a non paying rent/electric/water tenant in the apartment below, after having his fuse removed by kibtek, simply took other peoples. When we leave the apartment for any length of time, we simply remove it.

Thanks Groucho and Yrret - Having holes over the dials (as Yrret suggests) sounds the best to me. Though for it to be properly done we will need to make twelve holes ... for the twelve meters. In any case, I'll suggest it to our landlady.

The cost of a new fuse is only about 20 or 30TL Grumpy, at that price I'll have as many as you can get. They are stolen because they can get up to 100 tl, no questions asked. Box it in with a window so the meter man can read it.

If you own an apartment with a communal pool, take your fuse with you when you leave, or leave it in the apartment.
