I went in Starling today and asked for 5 packets of my usual brand of cigarettes. They told me I could only have 2 packets even though they had plenty more on the shelf.

I went into two of our local shops in Karsiyaka today.

One shop did not have any of my brand and the other only had two packets left on the shelf.

They stated that they were waiting for a delivery, so it could be that there is a shortage until the deliveries arrives.

It is obviously due to the price increase, on tuesday i asked for a carton of my usual and they said i could only have one packet. Today I went and got 3 packs at the checkout at the old price, then went to the ciggie counter and asked for a carton and got it also at the old price, no idea what going on.

If that is the case, I don't see what difference it makes to the shop. A sale is a sale. They know me in there and know how many ciggs I buy at a time. If they want to play funny buggers then they will lose a lot of money each week.

My father went in a KFC once and ordered several pieces of one type of chicken. The pleb behind the counter said you can't have that many just incase someone else comes in and wants them. Hence he never went back.

I said,'you are a big issue,now f**k off'.

The wholesalers have stopped delivering to the markets in protest at the price rises that is why they are rationing them.

The wholesalers are indeed worried because they fear people will buy their cigarettes south-side and/or on the mainland. Moreover, the case has been put to the government that instead of raising revenue, the increased tax will in fact lose them money because of fewer cigarettes being sold ın the KKTC.

Hos Bex out of cigarettes yesterday, I asked what the problem was and was told ZAM (duty). I am not sure how the duty increase is affecting the delivery to supermarkets, maybe the unions are involved.

Standing with my girlie at the fag counter @ Lemar [Karaolanoglu], she asked for the usual 5 pkts of 'gaspers' and was told: 'We can only sell two.' - so I piped up and told the saleslady that I wanted two, as well. She handed my wife the 4 pkts - no probs!

the government has increased the import duty on fags from 8% to 20% therefore the wholesalers are not importing

Glad I have just given up, its over one month now but its hard work.

Everything here will be the same price as the uk soon except for the sun.

Its a shame really about the cigs going up, as it was the only thing cheap here that some of the workers from turkey enjoy and could afford.

msg17,

Reminds me of being in Vermont and trying to buy a round of drinks. Only one drink at a time, I was told. Had to show ID which boosted the ego somewhat.

I tried two small markets on Saturday. One limited the number of packets I could buy, but the other had no limit at all.

Cyprus today reported:

Cigarette shortage as TRNC supplies are cut - Importers have stopped bringing cigarettes into the TRNC in protest at a government increase in tax, sparking fears of a tobacco shortage. Ministers increased import tax from 8 to 20 % on January 1st leading to distributors stopping bringing in products to North Cyprus.

I wonder how long smokers will be a cash-cow for our government! Massachusetts smokers didn't have enough time to recover from the last $1.51 hike in the excise tax on cigarettes, bringing it to $2.51, but anti-smoking coalition is planning to make it even higher! They want to increase the tax up to $3.76 per pack this year! It seems to me that all this hubbub around smoking harm was exaggerated with the main purpose to get as high tax revenue from cigarette producers as possible! I'm fed up of spending a fortune on cigarettes in this country. European cigarettes are not worse, but they are much more cheaper. Lately I started to order cigs online at http://www.smokin4free.com/. A pack of Marlboro costs me just $20,40 plus shipping costs.

hi. yeah, I've mistaken. I pay $20,40 per carton plus about $9 shipping. In total it's about $30 per carton ( $3 a pack). I don't know whether they ship to other countries as I ordered only from US.
