It appears that the message has got through to people as to the dangers of buying a property abroad i.e. Spain and Cyprus; and the serious issues over health care, family etc. The grass isn't always greener.

Hector, most means over 50%. According to other surveys 40% are considering emigrating so this fits in with the statement and yet still means that 8 million of the 20 million people in the over 50s age range are considering it. In the end about 2 million will try it. I doubt that very few of the over 70s will be considering emigrating anyway.

I understand your reasoning. The article opens with:

'According to research conducted by M&S Money, only six per cent of Britons between 50 and 70 years old are thinking about retiring abroad.'

I wonder why Marks & Spencer Money were conducting the survey, which appears to have been done recently. When were these other surveys you mentioned conducted? Either way, it does not bode well for the housing market in Cyprus.

Also I think you can sum it all up when owners considering moving abroad are advised '' not to burn your bridges'' !!!

M&S probably base all their findings on research into their own records. Lies, damn lies and statistics springs to mind, even if M&S are in the top ten credit people and the 2nd largest currency convertor it still only proves that people with M&S credit prefer to stay at home - probably the cost of a credit card these days prevents most from going abroad anyway.

Of the ten people I knew, before we left UK forever, who said they were going to do the same thing (all around the 55-65 mark) as us, eight of them have already moved abroad (Aus, Spain, NZ and Malaya) and the other two are waiting for their retirment in a couple of years time but already know where they are moving to (Portugal and TRNC) so I don't belive that the trend has stopped at all.

I think the current recession, the lack of decent pensions, having to work longer, the cost of long term medical care and the very negative publicity about buying abroad have all gone to alter peoples attitudes about moving abroad. Those that do want to move abroad are looking to stable English friendly EU countries. I think the era of the dream of retiring abroad has gone.

It's only a press release from M&S Money aimed at drumming up business among an increasingly ageing population. By mentioning key words like "overseas" and "retirement", seniors in their target range are likely to read and comment on the piece.

Also, the release has probably been planned for a relatively quiet time when people are thinking about holidays, there are news pages to fill and overworked, understaffed editorial offices are desperate for copy. Geoff @ msg 6 has kindly provided the actual media handout as issued, so you can compare real news with marketing. As ever, little nuggets of fact are woven together by spin.

I hate to argue with you but I can't see how it will drum up business for M & S Money. To decry the article as an advertisement doesn't address the issue that maybe the era of planning a retirement abroad has passed.

Hector & Denny,

Many future victims, of Cyprus and Spain, have now read enough (If they have done their homework)! to understand that it's not all it's cracked up to be? in the land of Sea, Sand, and.............. there are many large man eating sharks out in the mediterranean waters only too happy to devoid honest European/Asian/African citizens of their life savings! even though there are now no real fish beneath the mediterranean waters for the sharks to attack, there is still the odd damp squid! who thinks the TRNC is the promised land!

Its not just the number of retirees choosing not to move abroad but also those now trying to return from Europe and the TRNC.

Unfortunately money is no longer stretching as far as it used to. Repossessions in Spain are high and sellers are being warned to be sensible with their selling prices, as values continue to fall. Publicity regarding property scams is at an all time high, making potential buyers much more aware of the pitfalls of buying. Added to this is the problem of Health Care. At a time when we need access to good health care due to aging, expats find that they are no longer entitled to free NHS care. The introduction and employment of Overseas Managers in the NHS and computerisation tied into country entry makes getting access more problematic and a burden to those that have recently ended up paying huge medical bills. Added to this is the current recession.

Renting appears to be the more favoured choice. Holidays are cheap.

Why buy?

Hi Martin I think many here are left with no options, bradus has summed it up. You leave the UK you leave all you were or maybe entitled to. My friend left here for a job in turkey, didnt work out, sadly against her wishes returned to UK, she is entitled to nothing . No NHS , No dole as its been over 2 years out of the UK. We may have to go back as an asalym seeker.

Many over 50's have tried to buy and have been burnt! (including me) I would never ever have burnt my bridges, and would always have had a home in the UK (thank god)!

I would love to set fire to all that Aga rubbish, all those Aga crumbling ruins, all those lies, all those ravines on Amaranta now filled with rubbish, but all the members of the Government who lied again and again through their back teeth, along with all the Directors, Shareholders, and Lawyers whose greed got the better of them, my goal is to bring the lot of them to justice! each and everyone of them!

Hector @ msg 10,

The way it would make money for M&S Money is Baby Boomers reading that retiring in the sun may not be a good idea for people in their age bracket and investing the money instead! And who better than M&S Money, who kindly put out the press release! It's quite subliminal. Many reporters would put in "according to a survey" without plugging the company. But a lot depends on the news editor and advertising department, where relationships can get very tangled. That's why some of the biggest corporate scandals that the public really should know about never see the light of day.

Re message 16...Lilli if you did return as an asalym seeker just think of the implications.

You would get a house given to you.

Immediate medical care that us UK residents can only dream of...

Free dentist treatment that most of us would love...

Given a job and not have to worry how to get there, because transport is provided...

Would you really like to come back here?

Rob,

The way of the world is that you tend to hear more bad than good; particularly on the internet.

"Oh we do love a grumble!"

People who are happy don't like to ram it down the throats of those that aren't for fear of getting a long-winded sob story in return that takes up minutes of you life you know you will never get back.

I have no way to judge whether it's a minority or majority and I'm not sure I want to lose that much of my life finding out...

A poll on here would certainly give a false negative.... one way or the other.

Rob,

I'm fine! I wouldn't be if I spent all my time listening to other people's tales of woe... I like to concentrate on those things I can change... I think it's important to do so. A problem shared is not a problem halved... it's two people with a problem.

It's a good point I think; how many have already or would leave the TRNC if they could? It did seem to me that a lot more people left than arrived in 2008/2009. I don't know about 2010.

There were many that didn't arrive in 2004/5/6 although they had paid their money! and many who walked away losing everything they had worked for! some will try to make sure there will be no future victims! unless they understand the consequences of their actions! If they do fine! then they will have the knowledge to understand that the shark infested waters are teeming with lawyers who "Have no Duty of Care" Estate Agents who lie through their crunchy back teeth, and a Government who looks on, allows criminals onto their shores, does nothing, and laughs at ex pat idiots!!!

I agree with your viewpoint. Just how much has the TRNC economy lost out by the greed of the few you mention and it's governments inaction?
