Just wondered if anyone knows what happens when you leave a place of work and the work permit is cancelled. I am coming to the end of my employment and so, I assume, will have to apply for residency if I plan to stay... but, what happens when the work permit is cancelled with regard to visa and other arrangements. How will I know when the visa is cancelled? Is there a grace period or something similar? Can you cross the border and get a temporary visa or do you have to apply for residency (even though i may not be staying for too long)... Have asked so many people and seem to have as many as answers as people I've asked! Would really appreciate a little help if anyone knows anything?! Thanks and Happy New Year to everyone on C44! Spanna. x

"I assume, will have to apply for residency if I plan to stay" - Correct "How will I know when the visa is cancelled?" You won't automatically know. You will only know when you try to leave the country and they fine you for not having a valid tourist visa. "Is there a grace period or something similar? " - No. "Can you cross the border and get a temporary visa" - Yes, as long as the work permit visa has been cancelled by the Department of Employment AND their computer details are up to date. The day your Work Permit expires then you need to leave the country and return to recieve your new Tourist Visa, which is also the time you can then apply for your residency instead.

you must go to the work permit office in lefkosa near onder supermarket and get the cancelled stamp on your work permit asap if you leave it you can be liable for fines and if you cross the boarder and the computer states its cancelled but not stamped in passport you may not be able to cross. so get the stamp asap.

I asked the question of immigration last year. They told me I would have a month's grace before leaving the island. Whatever you choose to do, Spanna, I would recommend you do it as quick as you can. Everything official seems to work slowly, so any delays from you won't help IMHO

There is a grace period of 3 weeks before they fine you but best to go asap to the work permit office to find out when it was cancelled etc. If you go over the border and it has not been cancelled but is cancelled the next day the visa is invalid.

From experience last year. From the day of cancellation you get 30 days to cross the border. You must get your passport stamped cancelled first before you cross. You can then come in on a temporary visa and apply for residencey within the days given at the border. This was lFebruary 2010 but might have changed.

Thanks all... my employment doesn't end until the end of this month/beginning of Feb so from what's been said, I assume there is nothing i can do until then. All advice greatly appreciated- thanks everyone. Spanna.

Our accountant spoke to the Çalışma Dairesi (who issue the permits) in Lefkoşa earlier this year for permits due to expire. We were told there was a 3 month grace period given to allow you to get the new one issued, though I've also been told that as soon as the process of paperwork has begun and you've been issued with your card to go to get the blood test you are also given another months extension. I don't know if the same would apply if converting from work permit to residence permit.
