Actually DC an opening here.... a good tip for not just the elderly, always keep your mobile telephone in your pocket and then you can call for help in a situation like this.

If you cannot move, your partner should not move you ,just make you comfortable and keep you warm in case you go into shock, then call for help....A least that's what we were taught..................

I always keep my mobile im my pocket. If the battery was flat and as I don't have a partner I would probably lie there until somebody missed me ....which could be a very long time... ;-)

RE msg 3, nurseawful: OK, very good tip - I can tell you from my own experience. My phone has a possibility to pre-program ten numbers and I only have to press one of them without losing time looking up someone in the address book.

RE msg 2, vonny: Yes. Write down the number (or better: pre-program it in your mobile phone) for an ambulance: 112.

▶ My next question is the key of this thread: how do you tell the ambulance people where you live (someone with limited English may answer your call!)? (The same goes for the fire brigade, the police and others!).

Maybe good if we all learned Turkish!

Direct them to the nearest garage, shop, or landmark then phone a friend to meet them there and direct them to you.

RE msg 7, nurseawful: That's one way - I'm afraid the usual, time consuming way - to do it. I have a different idea, which could work for everybody in TRNC (awaiting the day we all get a postcode...). But let's first see what others may add in this thread.

My mobile phone has the Turkish language on it , perhaps some one could translate and store some emergency messages on it in Turkish , relevant to what emergency service you require , if for instance an ambulance is needed name , address , age of patient , and Dr of Patient

patient not breathing

patient choking

patient unconscious

Patient has had fall conscious / unconscious or something along those lines

If one needs an emergency service in Holland one calls the police and give the post code and the house number. Is that the same in the UK?

▶ No postcodes in TRNC - but we all have a (let's call it so...): G-code. Provided for free by Google Earth! My idea is based on that fact.

For the nurse or anyone else who knows the answer: is it possible to send a text message to 112 (or even email?)? Or is it voice only?

Hans I stand corrected yes you can send a text to 999 in the UK if you register your phone number. Aimed mainly at people with speech / hearing difficulties.

message 20,

Unfortunately not everyone was counted in the census. I know one old lady in Bellapais who has not been counted since she came to live here 30 years ago!!

RE msg 25, japeal: (...) Do properties not have a number given from when census's are carried oy that could be used? (...)

▶ That's another good idea, worth to find out! But I'm afraid it will be too difficult to introduce. If these numbers exist, are they digitalised (and there are other questions)?

Every house/flat has a unique "G-code", available on every computer: find your house on Google Earth, point your cursor on your house and look at the bottom: your unique "G-code" will be there: Latitude and Longitude. Write it down and use it when you need it.

Now all we have to do is explain it to the authorities and convince them that this will work. I hope to find support from the ambulance volunteers - they may know where to forward this idea (i.e. if they agree).

Before GPS was almost universal I always kept a 6 figure grid reference for our address in the telephone directory as all the emergency services can respond to this. Prior to we once awaited an ambulance which took 45 minutes to find us.

RE msg 30, deputydawg: I'm looking for a way to encode/shorten the coordinates on the Google Earth map (Latitude-Longitude) and I'm interested to know more about your 6 figure grid reference. Thanks in advance for your reply!

In terms of convincing the authorities that this is a good idea, what percentage of the TRNC population has access to a computer to find out their co-ordinates? I am sure that the answer to this will have a bearing on whether the powers that be will be interested or not or is this mainly to help non-Turkish speaking residents?

RE msg 32, joandjelly: Good point. But you don't need to HAVE a computer to find out your coordinates. Any neighbour, friend, muhtar etc WITH a computer in your area can tell you your coordinates.

Furthermore: I don't have the illusion that this idea is the 100% solution to the problem, but it will be better than the current situation, I think. See msg 7.

Well, I hope more readers of this thread will write why this is not a good idea or will come up with remarks, hints, tips and what have you.

If we don't think how things in TRNC can get better and try to make it work - not much will change.

If you are going to convince the authorities maybe worthwhile asking if Kibek and water suppliers could print it on their bills? That way every household would know their coordinates.

DC. All GB Ordnance Survey Maps have grid lines forming box grids of 100 sq klms. It is easy to further divide these boxes to pinpoint an area 10 metres X 10 metres by way of a 6 figure Grid ref. I have no cartography skills but I am sure it would be easy to produce a grid lined map of Cyprus. It would perhaps be necessary for the emergency services here to be taught how to read the maps which would be very simple to follow. I have no PC skills either for cut and paste but please google "Ordnance Survey Map Grid References" and click on "Interactive Guide to the National Grid". See also on that site "Using the National Grid". If this is feasible for Cyprus it would be invaluable for those needing an Ambulance or Fire Service in an emergency. Could be shared with the Police so that Elko gets personal delivery of his speeding tickets to be nailed to his chest. Perhaps Interpol would buy copies too !
