You must make sure that your power surge plugs and extension leads are in working order and that the green and red lights are on. Click on this link http://www.flickr.com/photos/28373139@N08/5346304488/ to see what happenened to all of mine in the early hours due to a high power surge. My electrician was amazed and rather lost for words as to how this happened, as one maybe but four.....!!!!

Better safe than sorry I think........!!!!

I think there is so much damage to power supplies they are doing a lot of repairs in the Lapta area and when the power is turned on again it whacks everything. I am not sure but I dont think you can get insurance for damages through surges. I am sure I will be corrected on this if I am wrong.

PS: I better sit down and make a few more of them. My stocks are running down fast but I have a good supply of materials, so no need to panic

I have just bought some surge plugs in Alsancak, that are fitted the same as an ordinary plug onto the exsisting cord of an appliance or extension lead with a red light indicator so you know they are working. They cost 10tl each and are made in Manchester. If they blow it is cheaper than replacing a surge extension lead.

If I had remembered about Elko's invention I would of tried i,t but have these now so will give them a try.

Tarry67,

You are talking about "Surge Protectors" or "Surge Arresters" as they are commonly known. I worked on the development of such products at GEC and indeed they were produced in USA under our licence. I was a member of the team that negotiated with the Americans. If there is very high voltage spike over 600 volts as may happen during thunderstorms, these devices shortcircuit the live, neutral and earth connections and thus blows the fuse or drops the MCB protecting that particular ring i.e. there are as many rings as the number of fuses in a house.

So "Surge Arrester" and an "Elko voltage Protector" are two different things and in fact one cannot be replaced by the other.
