We always use cash when in TRNC - we have problems alone with our Amex in UK - so we leave it at home!!

Most places don't like that card as the banks levy higher charges for the businesses that use them.

Most businesses don't like AmEx as Botanica says because of higher rates but also in the UK they are well known to be very, very late payers.

Thanks for the responses so far. I'm aware of AmEx's foibles, hence why I'm asking (on behalf of a friend who will be visiting) where it is accepted, if anywhere, in the North? Surely some of the larger restaurants must accept it???

A VISA credit card is the best to have throughout the world they are widely accepted. You even find that Mastercard credit cards are not taken in some places that is only because they are not quite as popular as VISA credit cards. I would suggest to your friend that he/she applies for a VISA credit card

I had already suggested a Visa card to them but as they arrive at the end of the week there's not enough time before they travel so not an option I'm afraid.

Not seen anywhere personally, even cash machines that take AMEX. Tonyf and Lilli, what are the prices like at the Dragon? I know it's a tad pricey but could you give me a rough example plz? For example a main chicken dish with egg fried rice, roughly how much? 30 - 40TL? more? Less?

Thanks Tonyf, I'll pass those recommendations on. They will be bringing some cash but were hoping to be able to use their card also.
