One wonders what was it all for. She upset the TCs and Turks. Why? Unless thats exactly what she wanted to do, in which case mission accomplished.

Here is the comment of the national-public German TV news: Dispute between Turkey and Germany The Turkish government answered the statements of chancellor Merkel concerning the Cyprus conflict with harsh critic. During visiting Cyprus she had claimed more flexibility from Turkey in solving the conflict. Turkish MP Erdogan rejected this. Merkel would be not aware of the fact that the Turkish side appreciated the Annan plan whilst the Greek Cypriots side declined it in 2004 . Turkish minister of foreign affairs Ahmet Davutoglu blamed Merkel to be one-sided: “If she would have listened to both sides she wouldn’t have made that unidirectional statements”, he criticised.

Merkel had visited the EU-country on Tuesday without meeting representatives of the Turkish occupied northern part of the country, which is not admitted by the EU. Cyprus satisfied with Merkels Statements The government in Nicosia declared Merkels statements would prove that MP Christofias’ efforts at a solution in the sense of the UN resolution and the EU laws are acknowledged and valued. During her first visit to the divides mediterranean island Merkel had commended the steps of the RoC up to now. “ You have proofed a really high degree of readiness to compromise which has not been replied in the same strength unfortunately” she told MP Christofias in Nicosia. She announced she would point out Turkey again and again the process would need progresses. Erdogan replied, his country would have engaged itself in a peace solution several times.

| Cyprus is divided since 1974 after a Greek revolt followed by a Turkish military invasion. The third largest mediterranean island is member of EU since 2004. The EU rules are valid in the Greek Cypriot part only. Cyprus is divided since 1974 after a Greek revolt followed by a Turkish military invasion. | Chancellor Angie is not a friend of Turkey becoming EU member. Knowing that in Germany only few people are informed about the Greek role 1963-1974 she couldn`t resist making cheap points. Regards, Rene |

Paul, you're right to retract. In fact most of the many many citizens with turkish roots in Germany are fully integrated and have German passports meanwhile. Many Germans realize the power the Turkish economy is developing with. Just the conservative voters Merkel is aiming at still are in fear of Turkish people and their culture ( partly due to the activities of the few islamic extremists). She has got intelligence and good consultants. Her words were well calculated and she forgot the historic facts intentionally. Regards, Rene

RE msg 1, Lilli: (...) On Angela Merkles visit south side today, was it one sided xx (...) ▶ Liz, if you really care start writing her name like Angela Merkel. More important if not more interesting than my remark: Germany, the locomotive of the economy in Europe, is economically doing better than in the past 20 years. The growth is tremendous. Neighbouring countries benefit also and only two months behind the results of the second German "Wirtschaftswunder". What a country - not moaning and whinging, but fighting recession.

Rene, Take your point, but i do believe that Germany have no intention of allowing Turkey into the E.U.They will always side with Greece,Southern Cyprus and France.I personally thought that she (Merkel) was totally out of order with her comments.Cast your mind back to 2004,and ask yourself, would we be having this conversation now,if Southern Cyprus hadnt voted no, Paul.
