Paul, the significant sentence in my mind is " we were taught to see Turkey as the enemy."

There are now 2 generations who having been taught this at school cannot see the situation in any other way, through no fault of their own. The sad thing is i cannot think how you change such a fundamental view.

Hi Breezyboy,

I understand what you are saying, and totally agree with you.But it seems to have worked

Northern Ireland, although some trouble does still occur there,

Paul.

Paul.

I think in NI they were very lucky that enough of the right people came along with the resolution to get peace into everyone's minds. Maybe this could work in Cyprus if enough like minded people can get their message over to the extent that the politicians have no other choice but to do something positive.

I maybe wrong but it seems to me that the politicians in Cyprus are narrowly elected by a minority of the people who they don't want to upset. Anything which may rock their boat is therefore never on the agenda.

Yes Yorg

I agree but we were talking about how do you get something positive moving. I was suggesting that the words of the GC guy in the article pointed to what is taught in schools. I have discussed this with people in the south including someone who had just left school. What I was trying to say was that this education which some say has re-written areas of history is not conducive to getting anywhere with a peaceful solution.

The analogy Paul uses of Northern Iteland would not have happened if schools had maligned one side or the other whether true or not. Any education system anywhere in the world should preach peace and understanding of fellow men whatever their religion, creed or colour.

Incidentally I know a 57 year old brit living in the south who says that he finds the turkish troops "very intimidating". He has been force fed this by work colleagues. there again he isnt the sharpest tool in the shed!

Newlad, you are off the mark. They used to do that in the past when they did not want Talat or Ozgur to win. They used to get them by the boat loads in.

But this time, Erdogan actually wanted Talat to win, so if they tried and it didn't work.

As to History of the Greek Cypriot is not a matter of re-writing it but actually not writing it. To have 2 pages of text in their history books about the period from 60 to 74 is criminal. They should be strung up for poisoning peoples minds.

I wonder how many Greek Cypriots actually know the the GC murder squads were set up in early January 1961 just after they cooked up the Akritas plan. As well as the fact that the leaders of these gangs were actually worked in Government as ministers. Yorgadjis, Sampson, Papadobullos etc.

breezyboy msg 2: " we were taught to see Turkey as the enemy."

How can you see that as the most significant quote in the piece? The guy is alluding to the fact that the people on both sides have been brainwashed by propaganda.

Surely the most significant part of the article (apart from to ultra-nationalists and the uneducated) is the peace dividend that would bring untold wealth and prosperity to both sides providing a solution is found that takes care of TC and GC security concerns and property issues. Seems to be a pretty attractive carrot.
