I you suffer with Asthma , High bp , Heart or Liver problems , stomach or Digestive problems , you should seek Medical advice before you think of taking Anti Inflammatory medication .

Solpadeine Max is another good painkiller which helped my sciatica enormously - I was virtually pain free after 2 doses. It was precribed by a UK doctor specifically for my sciatica and is available in some pharmacies here. I bought it at Aydin (I think that's the name) pharmacy - on the left 200 metres after Alsancak Starling as you head towards Karsiyaka and next to the really good butcher.

Hi all,

Thanks for the recommendations.

Chris,

I'm sure my wife would love to give your TENS machine a go. She has been in pain for nearly a week, on and off.

Simbas, quite right,i did ask my doctor would a tens machine help in any way,he told me to keep my money in my pocket, but if there are people out there who get help from these ten machines, then that is great, but as any good professional whould tell you,it is always best to have these things checked out with a doctor.

Asking the name/address of a nurse/doctor/specialist on a bulletin board is fine - but there must be a proper word in the English language for people asking medical ADVISE on a bulletin board.

I asked Erhard to see a friend of mine a couple of weeks ago. He declined because he doesn't want any new clients - he is winding down prior to retirement.

I go and see a guy in the south who is excellent, his name is Antonis and he is a qualified physiotherapist, osteopath and accupuncturist.

I come out feeling like I am walking on air, it is wonderful. If you want details TRNC Vaughan, post here and I will fish them out for you.

By the way he charges 35 euros per session, or he did at the last one I went to which included osteopathic treatment, tens and accupuncture - it took about 45 mins.

For what it is worth I had what I thought was sciatica and still have the same symptoms. It was only when after 2 months of pain I tried several physio treatments and when these were having no effect I saw an Orthopaedic consultant. He gave me a prescription for an MRI scan and it transpires that I have a cyst on my spinal cord and it is this that is causing the pain and I am waiting for an operation to remove it. In addition to this I also had the worst headache I have ever had in my life and this lasted 2 weeks and am pleased to learn that this was also caused by the cyst and nothing else.

I would suggest therefore that if the symptoms persist, then I would recommend an MRI for peace of mind.

I agree. I had physio for my back for 3 months(3 times a week) 3 years ago in Girne. Finally she gave up on me and said I should go to a hospital and get an MRI. I wasted a lot of money on the physio, when my back problem was much more serious than anything physio could help with.

Vaughan your poor wife, I too suffer constant pain with arthritic of the spine I am lucky to have a pain free day ! When my daughter came to visit she gave me some Nurofen back pain relief patches, it states 8hrs of relief and boy were they a God send. They do not do the Nurofen ones here but we did find something similar at the chemist, they were like a big elasto paster, but I found them to be irritating on the skin, but felt the relief immediately and thought the next time I get the I could cut them in half as they do not have the jell inside like the Nurofen patches have. I would give them a try, A friend also gave me an electric heat pad that is a God send every day I need to use it. So sorry I am unable to offer your wife the use of it, but do try the hot water bottle..

Chris please remember also to order plenty of pads when getting the tens as they just come with the 4 needed and they do not last very long either. Hope this helps in some way, Spider,X

You need to find out whats causing it before you treat it. If you dont it could go on for weeks or even years. And do more damage in the process.

MRIs are fab but only show what is happening when you are lying down. There is a new type of scan which show what is happening while you are standing up and moving!!! Dont think you can get them there.

Some will find sitting upright helps, while for others it makes it worse. Same with swimming. Alot of it is trial and error.

If taking strong painkillers, look at taking something like Omeprazole before hand. These are Gastro-Resistant Capsules that will line the stomach first and stop internal stomach damage that things like Voltarol and Diclafenic can cause.

Good luck. It is one of the worst pains in the world.

During December with snow and ice on the ground, I fell over on my eft side about four times, walkinbg my beloved Westie!!! On 2nd January I had the most pain, ower left back. I coudn't stand the pain any longer and went to see a GP. As predicted, he diagnosed nerve damage and prescribed, as predicted, anti-inflamms, Diclofenic (?). After two days, back to the surgery. Saw a different GP, said that because of the pain, I had been overdosing on painkilers and anti-inflamms. He was very sympathetic and prescribed Tramsdol (yuk) strong painkilers only if I promised not to overdose. I was very grumpy, he told not to get too stressed and to keep calm. My boyfriend was becoming concerned and said I should see a specialist and that he would make an appointment immediatey. I said that I would wait until my personal trainer came back after maternity leave. I saw my personal trainer yesterday morning, stretch exercises. Today, no pain, no drugs. I just want now to get those awful ...

.....drugs out of my system.

I know I needed them at the time, but they didn't do much good at all. I don't take drugs or smoke weed or anything like that so the drugs were alien to my system. I felt lousy on them, so thank God my personal trainer is back on the scene.

So my advice is, anyone who has back pain, please do try some simple stretching exercises. Face the bottom of the bed, stretch your arms and touch the bed, back straight, with gentle moving up and down movements. Hope this helps.
