Is this the latest scam.....We've had our villa for six years and now we have been informed by our builder that as a requirement to receiving our 'kocan' after this long period of time, we now have to pay the builder £150.00 to have our in situ telephone line connected like it or not. Is this a legal requirement ...as we have been told. Has anyone had similar experiences of this?

As far as I know that is the standard connexion charge here for a fixed line telephone, whether you apply direct or if it is on your behalf by A.N.Other (e.g. builder. developer). Geoff

We wish it was that funny! We were told there would be nothing else to pay for in May last year....this has come up now along with Fire Hydrants. Do realise we might need them, but every time we get close to obtaining the kocan (in May the solicitor said a matter of weeks), the builder dreams up yet another way of getting more cash from us.

I can't imagine that this is anything but another scam. Another point is that I have several friends in Karsiyaka who would love to have phone lines but can't get them. Best to go and ask in the Girne telephone office.

I have heard this as well. I do not think it's for the actual telephone connection, it's just for the cabling along the street. The fire hydrant is also to be "piped" along the street. It, like my and my neighbours drainage, runs only along the frontage of our properties. Therefore before it reaches our property, and after it leaves our property, it does not "join" to anything else! We do have manholes at either end. The water for the fire hydrants will be switched on to your area in case of a fire. Same piping as when you get Belediyere water. All properties that could be fed by the "switching on" of the water, will all have to go to their stop-cocks at the front of their properties and switch them off until the water is switched off. I think this will work very well. Well at least in winter whilst it's raining!

Thank you all for your suggestions, as we are in the UK at present there's not much we can do about it. I'm sure it will get sorted, thanks again everyone.
