Hi all. I would like to know who you think is the best butchers and also the best place to buy all types of meat. (Beef, Chicken etc)

Are the chickens you buy here from supermarkets battery chickens, free range or organic? Where do they come from?

Do they hang the meat here and is there any where to buy other meats like rabbit?

Any idea on prices?

hope you can help

Thanks in advance

Bell foods are doing fresh, free range, organic capons for 8TL a kilo. Average bird about 3kg. Delicious!

Never had a problem on Shankhill Road but Falls Road and Creggan something else ! The Pork Shop opposite Starlings in Alsancak is now very popular again. It seems they have returned to their original recipe for Sausages and Pork Steaks and Chops in all sizes at very competitive prices. Also sells excellent beef from time to time but necessary to visit regularly as it sells very quickly.

The Pork Shop (Pun?) has become expensive compared to prices a year or so ago.

I recollect chops were 14TL/kilo then and now they are 18TL.

Compared to beef and "lamb" that's cheap, but I still think the price rises are just "squeezing until the pips squeak", at which point the maximum selling price has been ascertained.

I have to say the meat from the Kibet shop in karakum (opposite Lemar) is very good indeed and I think cheaper than the supermarkets.

I have not had any bad meat from Kibet shop but did find their T-bone steaks a little tough, but that could have been down to my cooking of them!

I am happy to agree with Vaughan - message 9. The meat from this butcher is brilliant and he always hangs his meat for a good length of time (21 days minimum from recollection). Certainly a couple of times he has refused to sell me a particular cut (probably ribeye steak because that is my favourite) and said to come back on such and such a day because it needs more hanging. He is a very very good butcher - and he will cut meat to the thickness you require unlike many others.

As to Tempo (message 11), I used to buy meat there until one day I saw him with a can of food colouring spraying the mince to make it look redder and fresher. Never again.

Msg.9 I bought a couple of nice LOOKING! steaks from him a few weeks back and they were as tough as the soles of my shoes! Never go back again. By the way have you ever seen the meat being delivered to this or any other shop? The guy who takes it out of the truck wears a bloodstained shirt that has never seen a wash. Even in SA they wore pvc smocks to carry in the carcasses. The butcher in the same complex as Turkbank in Alsancak is quite good in my opinion.

Has to be the guy by Aydin Chemist for me, havent tried his beef yet but the Lamb from there is excellent, fresh, tender, trimmed to your liking and well priced. He deserves to do well, so lets support him.

The problem here there is no consistency-one day a bullock next day an old milk cow.

Difficult to give a good recommendation I have had good and bad from all.

It seems pay your money take your chance.

What I will say I see a lot of TC's at the meat counters in the South-wonder why?

I had a lovely joint of Pork from the Pork Shop, I ordered for a lean leg joint. It looked and tasted lovely.

His Pork pies are very nice too. Very different from the ones we're used to, totally different texture, but eat lovely , and none of that awful jelly stuff in it.

For those that enjoy their food at the Fast Food cafe/restaurant in Alsancak be aware that they have their own butchers which is located just up the road and for me they supply probably the best meat around.

Good to read so many positive comments about Mr Porky's. We always buy pork products from him to freeze and take back to Oman when we visit....Roll on April! Also love to barbecue his monster chops when we are there. I've heard his free range/organic chickens are delicious but never tried one yet...never been any in stock when we call in!

Re prices...they've gone up everywhere else so I suppose his will too, especially during the off tourist season!

What about the butcher near Mr Pound shop in Girne? It's always been recommended by one or two friends of ours but we've never sampled his meat...what's the general opinion?
