alcohol has nothing to do with gout according to my GP and hospital consultants. Not a lot to stop it but when you have it just put your leg up and take it easy. A few co-codamol help.

I am a gout sufferer and have been prescribed Allupurinol (300 mg) tablets which I take one a day, cost about TL7 for 28 tablets.

This drug is not a cure but is supposed to stop a bad attack from happening. It has worked for me as I have not had one for nearly ten years.

For me, the only thing that really sets my joints tingling is asparagus which is apparently absolutely stuffed with uric acid and it's the crystals of this acid that causes gout. Having said that, other members of my family who are fellow suffers have different "triggers" to their attacks.

I think my first action would be to see your doctor and gom from there.

Good luck

Hi,

I was stunned to be told I had gout.Everyone said it was high living! Broad Beans, sardines, salmon and all oily fish

trigger mine...all things I am supposed to have for my heart. The best natural preventive is sour cherry juice.Loook it up. I t certainly works for me. If I feel an attack coming on I drink a pint of the stuff and usually it goes straight away. Allupurinol can cause problems if you are taking certain heart tablets. Also Voltarol with the cherry juice and bicarbonate of soda is like an anti gout bomb!

Message 10 Certain foods and drinks do trigger it off, and my eldest son has it at times. He knows to

avoid red wine, port, oysters and some other things. Alcohol in itself is not too bad, but red wine is definitely

a trigger. Although too much alcohol will cause dehydration which in itself doesn't help. It can be extremely

painful. I know of a woman who thought she had arthritis in her knee, but tests showed it was gout.

My doctor prescribed for me " ENDOL" ( only about 3 tl for 28 tablets) I was cured after 2 tablets and now take one a day. I haven't had a recurrence for over two years now! I recommended it to a friend with problems and his too disappeared with 3 tablets!

I was prescribed arcoxia by my gp, they are brllliant, similar to diclofenic but far stronger. 1 a day and if the gout has a strong hold may take 2-3 days to go. They are expensive at £2 a tablet and as far as I know the only Pharmacy to stock them is the one in Caltakoy just past Supreme supermarket. When the gout has subsided then take allopurinol, 1 a day every day which prevents the over production of uric acid. Or you could do it the hard way and watch what you eat and drink.

Diclofenic sodium is the drug of choice in the UK for gout. Allopurinol can only be started when you DO NOT have gout and does stop it from reoccurring however it should only be prescribed by a Dr after he has checked the medication you are already taking.

Red wine is a definite trigger for most people and definitely port.

Mostly you hear of people having gout in knees and feet but it can occur in any joint.

Always play safe before taking medications...............See a Dr.

Tomatoes trigger gout for me and I recently read a report that said carbonated drinks should be avoided. Of course nurseawful is correct, you should see a doctor

Drink more water than you think you need, and regularly - this helps prevent the onset of gout and flushes the system - 'Adam's Wine' - that's the caper!

Er......but not from the tap in TRNC, or the 'Dreaded Lurgy' is liable to take you!

Those who live in Cyprus and have the misfortune to be susceptible to Gout may wish to monitor intake of water melons also. An Infantry Unit I was with in S America was given water melons and sweet melons at every meal to offset the boredom of drinking vast amounts of water which was necessary but not very tasty. Within a few months there were numerous soldiers hobbling rather than marching and also large numbers excused wearing boots due to swelling and pain in feet and ankle joints, subsequently diagnosed as Gout.

Depdawg

I don't think watermelons are all the problem, it is all the other rich foods and drink, or at least that's what my DR in England told me yrs ago, so I took his advice and I have not had any Gout attacks for years.

Kind Regards

Gout was historically known as "the disease of kings" or "rich man's disease".

Husband used to have gout badly. He got told by the doctor that it was too much protein that turned into uric acid and then into the chrystals. told to avoid beans, chocolate, liver and anything high in proteins. He is on Allupurinol but you got me worried about that now because he had a heart attack 3 years ago so will make sure he mentions it to the Doctor.

brend your DR was right, it is too much protein in a diet which forms crystals in your joints, especially the feet, the only way to stop it is by a change of diet, less rich foods, I know I have it myself.

A friend of mine had a bad attack while he was here last month... he was in agony. He had a cortizone injection while he was here and the next day he could hop up and down on the foot that he couldnt even bare bedsheets to touch the night before.

He also drank lots of cherry juice as that is supposed to quickly alieviate the problem
