I love chocolate and at the moment its not quite an addiction, saying that I look for it every evening after dinner, I think its an age thing, needing something sweet after dinner. So I have asked that Mr Spider no longer buy me chocolate ever day, just every other day LOL.. The thing is he feels so very bad if the dogs do not get their quoter too..He always leaves them each a little of his dinner too. But I eat all mine LOL..so I just googled this link for him to read and thought I would share it with you all, in the hope that you can also convince him that its not good for our dogs. My daughter is mortified that he gives them little treats he calls it,just because he feels guilty, AHHH, I can't seem to win on this one..

Maria. I was always under the impression that it was bad to give dogs chocolate. Folks, correct me if I`m wrong. If I am, my dog is deprived!!!

Whistler,

I could be wrong but chocolate bars (100% chocolate) or dark chocolate is bad for dogs. Our dog Bella loves maltesers as much as hubby and they can get through a box in 20 minutes! With no ill effects to Bella.

Chris maybe maltesers are less harmful I do hope so, because tonight thats what they had a bag between the two dogs...But I am not convinced they should have any, and if it were down to me, well maybe once a week would be OK.

When I was younger (a while ago) a family dog almost died after one of my brothers fed the dog chocolate and still remember the vet saying that it should never be given to dogs, guess thats why they finally came up with the doggie milk chocolate button like treat so that our dogs did not feel like they were missing out. Guess its better to be safe than sorry - anyway less for them, more for us!

Chocolate is bad for dogs - in fact, veterinarians consider it poison. Chocolate contains theobromine, a central nervous system stimulant that may cause seizures, excessive urination (leading to dehydration), and heart damage.

Chris, message 3. Our dog (died a few years ago, aged 16) would do anything for Maltesers. He was going deaf in his old age, but he could hear a bag of Maltesers being opened from about 3 miles! Like George, I am a Malteser addict (well, most chocolate, really) and can eat a box to myself in no time at all, I'm ashamed to say. Anyway, I know chocolate is supposedly bad for dogs, but maybe the fact that he was a rescue mongrel meant that he didn't seem to suffer any ill-health from his addiction. I should also say that, in the days when I HAD TO HAVE chocolate and there was none in the house, I have been known to eat doggie chocolate.

The dog lived to a ripe old age and I'm still here.

Best wishes to you both.

Jean

When we first took my beloved staffi from the shit hole rescue centre, we took he in the car with us to Cardiff. Parked outside marks food hall. We had a grill on the car inside so he couldnt get to the seats. He loves being in the car. We shopped and I hate chocolate but love Markies choc raisins and their cherry liquers. Unknown to me as I was away in per una Guido had bought both choc treats for me. Stuidly we placed them in the boot where is was in this estate car. We checked on him ped him and went to lunch. When we got back he had broken down the guard and lay on the back seat legs in air totally pissed. He had the lot. Since that day he cannont resist chocolate, he smells it from a million miles away. I am guilty as as a treat i bought it for him. Now is is ill 10 years or there abouts old i do feel its my fault. I did always in UK buy the doggie choc but I know he would love it now xxxxx

I remember in England years ago when cocoa shell mulch became popular (as opposed to bark) and our local paper reported a few dogs taken ill after trying them!

To paraphrase someone (can't remember who said it now) "seven days without chocolate, makes one weak"!!!!!!!!!!
