Does anyone know where we can buy things like toaster, kettle, microwave, iron, ironing board, dustbins etc etc from - is there one store that does all of this or should we shop around? And good prices as well?

Best place is 2001 in Girne for things like that, the shop is just off the main street, next one down to Tin Pan Alley, there's a jewellery shop on the corner (or shoe shop).

There is also a shop in Esentepe which sells quite a lot of odds and ends, including ironing boards etc. Its at the end of the main street just before Kim Supermarket on the right hand side. Also I know the Yapi market in Esentepe sells dustbins, brushes and all the hardware stuff you need. If there's something you don't know how to explain then ask in the house opposite the Yapi market (bright blue/green and white) Sonia was born in Blackpool and obviously speaks perfect English and Turkish and her husband is the local Hoger (teacher). Failing that if the old guys are in the shop having coffee ask one of them, Tezzer is normally in there and he can help out.

Personally I would bring out a microwave and iron as these are a lot more expensive over there than they are in the UK (always assuming you are coming from the UK). We've managed to bring most items out, even large rugs. They go on board separately and no questions are really asked. Girl at check in just said what is in the box/sack I told her and she just nodded.

Acutally I think the new Supermarket opposite the Mosque sells kettles and all things like that.

CTA and yes we flew into Ercan. We normally go over our limit as well without any problems.

We have flown CTA to Ercan several times and checked items in through the 'Out Of Gauge' desk. We've only taken non-breakables that way, such as blankets and a beaded door blind, but i saw one couple with several boxes of roller blinds (from Argos!) and another with a BBQ (one of those little round ones on spindly legs that look very fragile!)

I aslo travellled on CTA from Ercan to Istanbul with a girl who had her cat in a box on her lap!

For all their faults CTA are certainly the most lenient with excess baggage charges, when i emmigrated i had something like 95 kgs of luggage, they charged me for 10 kgs, in June i flew with Mytravel from Larnaca, was 2 kgs over(and they charged me!!, tried pointing out that as i only weigh 11 stone and the lady beside me was'a bit bigger' than me, couldn't they waiver it).

Nothing to do with shopping!

I was amused by your comments regarding excess bagage, and have often thought how unfair the weight allowance is. My wife and I have a total body weight of less than 20 stone between us, and find it annoying that other people in the queue at check in desks often individually weigh in excess of our total weight, so why should we be limited to the same baggage weight allowance?

suntanman...most airlines work on astandard weight per passenger,so if one is large and the other is small it tends to balance out.all aircraft have what they call a maximum all up weight for take off,so they (thecrew) have to work out fuel weights ,passenger average weights, plus the weight of there aircraft, andof course luggage allowance. The all up weight then decides how much fuel will be used on the journey, so I can see your side of the argument. If everybody was to turn up with large amounts of luggage,at least three things would happen(1)half of the luggage would not get loaded due to limited space inthe hold...(2) exttra fuel would have to be taken on

(3)the plane would get off the ground

and airlines dont need any excuse to hit you with extra penalties as we all know

suntanman.....(3) should read the aircraft would not get off the ground

This all came to light last year when a feeder liner crashed on take off and it was found at the invetigation later that average passenger weight was to low and too much luggage was loaded.
