I have often watched in amazement how tourists "do" the St Hilarion castle. In and out of this world famous medieval monument, within 30 minutes, they hurry back to their coach and off they go - to "do" Bellapais and "do" Kyrenia. All in one day... Arrrgh! All they've seen are old stones and understood they've nothing, because especially in St Hilarion ("Dieu d'Amour" of the old Crusaders) you only see what you know. And you definitely need a good groundplan to start with. The simple groundplan in the leaflet you receive at the ticket-office wasn't to my liking and that's why I produced a complete remake with attention for every wall, room and corner. I'm pleased to offer it to the reader now and would be grateful if you report to Hans Doeleman any irregularities you may find, via: mcf.trnc@gmail.com View and/or download my free groundplan here: ▶ [ http://is.gd/r3OoB6/Visit_St_Hilarion_with_this groundplan! ] [ MORE ]

[ CONTINUED ] Expats in TRNC and tourists from all over the world: take your time while "doing" one of the two most famous castles (Crac des Chevaliers in Syria and St Hilarion) in the Eastern Mediterranean. And if you want to prepare yourself for a first time or renewed visit, read more about St Hilarion, follow this link: ▶ [ http://is.gd/523WVY/For_visitors:_All_about_St_Hilarion! ]. Last of all I'd like to thank my young Cypriot Turkish friend Mustafa Tolgali, one of the two official guides (KITREB) in St Hilarion, who gave me his invaluable help during the many hours and days we spent together in the castle we both love so much.

Smoking inside St Hilarion is not allowed, although smoking "seems to be permitted" on the second level, in the belvédère, (the vaulted loggia with open archways - no 45 on the groundplan). Definitely forbidden is picking flowers (very rare specimen grow in St Hilarion!), mushrooms and breaking branches from the rare trees.

Only this morning we were talking about visiting St hilarion Castle with some of my visitors. It seems many people who have lived here for many years have not bothered and do not know what they are missing. The map would be very handy next time I take up some students and/or friends there - BUT! I also cannot open the downloaded file! Please send me the passwoord to turkishlessons1to1@yahoo.com thaks!
