I lived in Berlin and think it is a lovely city. I have a piece of the wall. My father was in the forces there and we were allowed to go to the east side to shop. It was so much cheaper.

I was there 75 until 78 and stationed at Gatow. My wife misses FRIS. I miss Shultize beer. Did you ever do the Shulti visit. The bodies of 4 RAF aircrew from the war, found by the East Germans, were handed back to us at Glenicia Bridge ( normally the hand over point for spys etc ) by a Russian detail and I was NCO ic the detail which was an experience. Anyone take the military train up to the zone ? Breakfast 1/4d , lunch 2/-d and a 4 cource dinner 2/6d. Sitting there eating and swilling our wine whilst the East German and Russian soldiers looked on. What about BAFFS. Still have some ? My wife want to go back for a holiday but I am not so sure revisiting places can some times be a dissapointment. Having the wall round the city made it extra special in some ways.

We buried Spandau Prison at Gatow. Baffs were finished before my time. Did the Train a few times, still have a bottle of wine as a souvenir. Don't go back, it wasn't at all the same when we tried it (we had no right to expect it to be!).

There were 4 supervising officers. British, French, Russian and American, all of Colonel rank. Each brick was checked and counted before being taken under arms to Gatow. Nice new Naafi was built in it's place. I was the safety officer for the job and still have a little souvenir from Hess's cell.

The Hilton was the tower block accommodation in the Barracks. It was always called Smuts, after the great South African General.
