Do you think that the TRNC Government employees are justified in striking because Turkey has introduced austerity measures? Are the Turkish tax payers right in demanding that the TC's should have equivalent salaries, when doing exactly the same jobs?

I don't think Turkey really cares about the TRNC citizens, there only concern is the logistical location, i think they have a two or three year plan to take over the North this started by offering Turkish Companies incentives to operate here, hence Cratos and the Bafra project (in progress), then to take over the national carrier KTHY (completed), next it will be utiliies starting with the power station and ending with the water pipeline, then the communication systems and once they are satisfied that everything is in place they will complete the operation by ousting the current administration, lowering the TRNC flag and start running this ship with both long and short term goals and most importantly a vision for the future.

If there are any TCs that don't work for the government they should stand on the march route and throw eggs at these ingrates. And how about the teachers who are taking bus loads of pupils to the march, to boast the attendance, while their parents are angry with them for hindering their kids education. Double the Turkish wages and retirement at thirty, then expecting the Turkish people to pay for it – they have to be mad. The GC’s love it, just what they have worked for over all these years - the collapse of the TRNC economy. Aslan, if you are right, then it is even more important be self-sufficient and this means cutting costs - particularly over staffing on ridiculously high wages, at least a proper thirty-nine hour week and a sensible retirement age. If this was properly implemented there might be no need to privatise and we could keep the essential services under TRNC control.

Exactly my point Troodo, these are the teachers that get a uniform allowance have you ever heard of such a ridiculous waste of tax payers money, off course the GC administration must be laughing out loud watching the collapse of the TRNC economy and understanding where all the monies have gone for infrastructure, education e.t.c over the last 37 years, USAID, EUROAID, TURKAID where has the money gone, what has it been spent on and who is accountable?

Taken from North Cyprus Free press: Some salaries have been cut by 40 per cent,” Turkish Cypriot Secondary Teachers Union (KTOS) head Sener Elcil explained. He was also unhappy about plans to privatise state run businesses accusing the government of “a transfer of power from Turkish Cypriots to mainland Turks”. This was particularly true in the case 0f the transfer of Cyprus Turkish Airlines (CTA) with a loss of 700 jobs. “Who is going to stay and work for these salaries? Most will go to Europe, and we’ll be replaced by people from Turkey,” 28 year-old schoolteacher Hatice Dortlemez complained. EXACTLY. So why have no moves been taken towards self sufficiency? Why after more than 30 years is the TRNC so totally reliant on Turkey? Those that control the purse strings will be the ones that have control.

No - Yes. Without Turkey behind them the country would not survive. No point in trying to prove you can stand alone when it is very obviouse that they can not - unless - the rest of the world will agree that the TRNC exists. Biteing the hand that feeds you is a very silly policy.

I took part at the great meetings in support of the Annan Plan and furthermore I never voted for UBP, the party in power but I stayed away from the meeting today. I never support the partisan actions of this government and there is plenty of that but I do support the austerity measures. The wages of the would be new civil servants has been cut by 40% but not the existing ones. Even now there is no shortage of demand for becoming a civil servant. Supply and demand is a good measure. All retirement wages are free of tax at the moment, even those earning over 6000 TL per month. the government wanted to tax them but the constitutional court overruled it. shame on them. ismet
