OK, we have had enough, the loos are both leaking and we have to keep them permanently turned off at the wall.

We have fitted the New, Super Duper Heavy Flappers and they are as useless as the old ones.

We think there is a new way to flush the loos now with a push button on the top instead of the old pull ones, does anyone know of a plumber who will fit our two loos with them.

We are in Karsiyakia (seaside) and are so fed up with what is such a silly problem.

Please email me with details of good plumber who will not rip us off and who knows the system which I have just described. I heard that there was a good one somewhere in Alsancak but cannot find out his name.

Please help

No, are you joking, it has only been built for 4 years. I am sure they will get around to it some time in the meantime my mate Mehmet Gargary brings my water. Why do you ask?

Mains water makes no difference, if you have standard North Cyprus plumbing then everything is fed from your storage tank/s via the pump. With regards to your 'leaks' if you have the standard 'pull to flush' cistern then there is only two ways it can leak (and that leaking will be into the toilet bowl). First of all the flapper valve regardless of whether it is weighted or not will eventually develop a build up of crud around the valve seal and also around the orifice it is supposed to seal. Turn of the water supply, flush and then remove the flapper valve. Clean the seal of the valve and also the mating surface. Smear both mating surfaces with petroleum jelly and reinstall. The other source of leaks is from the ballcock valve and the same build up of crud will stop the ballcock valve from cutting off the water supply. It is easier to replace the ballcock valve than trying to clean it.

RE msg 1, suehowlittle: I had the same problem. Cleaned the old ones (are they called "Flappers" in English? I don't even know how these things are called in Dutch..!) and later bought new ones.

Solution: fill them with sand (through the little hole in the conic shape) and close them with some glue. When you pull the knob on top of the cistern and let it go - the water stops flushing at once.

I hope I have explained it in some sort of English...

Hans

There should be no need to fill them with sand. If both mating surfaces are thoroughly clean then the build up of water pressure in the flush tank should provide a perfect seal. After all they all work when they are new and the only thing that stops them from working efficiently is a build up of crud on both mating surfaces.

Sue

I am away on business and return to the TRNC Sunday night and if you are still having problems then I am willing to come out and have a look. All it will cost you is the yapi market price of a replacement ballcock if needed.

My e-mail is in my profile.

The reason I ask if you was on mains water I have found there is more of a sludge build up using tankers I assume

you have a storage tank which feeds an underground tank which is then pumped up to tank on the roof.

Every two years i have all tanks cleaned and flushed out some of my neighbours have filters fitted and hey no leaks

before i started doing this everytime we came back £ to penny a toilet would leak.

My sister are now on mains for past two years and nil problems some of that tanker water is filthy I know of folks that have skin problems and also suffered hair loss

Have filters fitted clean the system down hoover the tanks clean the sludge/calcium refill.

I believe that different water does make a difference, our water in Baspinar develops much less limescale than our friends in Alsancak.

She is suffers with a lot more problems than we do, I am constantly cleaning her flappers, ( should have repahrased that ).

I fitted a brand new one recently, and I felt it needed a bit of weight in it to stay down, (it was limescale free and brand new,)

I think Hans idea sounds good.

If you can get some one to put you in the english syphon pack, it is far better, I beleive there is some one here who does this.

I used to import Turk sanitary ware into the UK, and the cisterns always came minus the guts, so most UK ones will fit.

Also when you do sort it. drop a lime scale tablet or remover in your cistern every couple of months,

Must also try the Petroleum Jelly, sounds a good idea.

Go and speak to Jelal at the Yapi market next to Pools R Us (opposite Starling supermarket).

He was recommended to us by some friends to fit a new shower and since having that done I have used him for several problems in regards to toilets and plumbing problems.

I can highly recommend him. Speaks perfect English and is 100% genuine.

Would no use anyone else.

His phone number is 0533 8602754.

DC: You can also fill it with water and no need to seal off the hole. However it is not easy to get water into it unless you have an injection needle handy. The added advantage is that you can control the amount of water going down the drain at each flush. As soon as you let it go it stops flushing.

The Turkish made 'double flush' [full & economy] unit, as fitted by the plumber that 'Ronnies Furniture' advise their customers to use is the best answer.

▶ Maybe my explanation in "Dutch English" wasn't clear enough... I'll make a picture of what's needed and how to do it (i.e. how I did it!) later today. I did it for two toilets and the result is really 100% satisfactory. But, of course, there may be other solutions!

We can also highly recommend Racoonchic. He changed our flush system for us and has also sorted out many other plumbing problems we have encountered here.

Racoonchic, Do I first have to locate the push flushers or can you find them (2).

I would be happy for you to fit them for us - you come highly recommended I see.

Our house is in Karsiyaka - we actually have a couple of other plumbing jobs which need doing.

1. Our over-sensitive pump (drives us mad) needs adjusting or replacing. It is also in a very bad place and needs resiting.

2. We would like to have a water filter system which cleans the water before it goes to the tank on the roof which will prevent toilet problems in the future and help to keep our washer & dishwasher in good nick.

We cannot get near the house for mud at the moment (no proper road in) but will ring you when it dries out sufficiently for us to get to it. (We presently live Girne)

There is nothing wrong with your English Dutch, all I was saying was that instead of sand you can inject water through the hole very easily and no need to seal it. The hole is too small for the water to come out of it.
