Not sure what others think, but we all know that there was a massive strike the other day in Nicosia… TC bad mouthing the country that once saved them, do they not realise that if it was not for Turkey they would have nothing, nor is it likely they would exist… DO they not understand that if it was not for Turkey financing them they would have collapsed years ago… Would love to see some of these government officials working in the private sector… Bad enough they sit all day and sweet FA… Just annoys me to see them acting the way they do… GOD help us all!

Biting the hand that feeds you, comes to mind. Perhaps some should visit the Turkish Soldiers cemetries and reflect on those that layed down their lives so that TC's are still existing in Cyprus today.

Well said, its such a shame... the people have become so lazy and expect great returns for doing nothing... how can a country survive by having 70% of its work force living on the state?

yorgozlu, Your link to India and its British heritage is the say the least , bazaar. So perhaps you can clarify and help those of us for whom the weather is no good and are bored to understand why the strike has taken place. On the face of it this has little to do with Britain and more to do with overpaid and under-employed public servants reluctant to give up their ride on the gravy train.is there more to it than this?

Msg 4 Perhaps you can't see the wood for the trees. Standing back can sometimes give a clearer picture. sitting amongst the trees blinds the obvious. Just because we are not TC's does not bar us from giving our observations and opinions. You are not afraid to give your opinions re the UK and you are obliged to do so, but rarely see anyone criticising you for it .So a little more tolerance from you would not come amiss. Have a nice day.

Forgive me, but why would a state owned monopolies, making millions if not billions in profit, ( ) and employing local TC's, be up for sale to foreigners? Regarding the telecom (landline) monopoly. Where in the world have you got a very large percentage of the population wanting a landline, but cannot get one. We are not talking about the arctic, or deepest darkest africa. PS I have one.

Surely there is no policy relating to selling to Turkish businessmen, they are for sale to the highest bidder even Turkish Cypriots who have worked in the UK I believe Turkish state owned companies are also up for sale, to anyone including Turkish Cypriots

I have another question, why do some Turkish owned businesses ONLY employ Turks and not TC's? I once asked a manager at The Mercure, who replied, TC's will only work for relatives or the State. I know that this is a generalisation, but is there some truth in it? He did add, some TC's will work for someone other than a relative or the State, but only as a manager/boss! I think he was trying to tell me that being a manager/boss was not actual work! How many of you that have cleaners/gardeners, etc employ TC's as opposed to Turks or Pakistani waiters?

Paul...you won't be able to convince some TC's that there is anything wrong with the situation as it stands. They seem to have a superiority complex, and somehow think they are more deserving and should have special treatment, and they generally look down on mainland Turks as second class citizens.

The TRNC has a bloated public service. The salaries and working conditions they give themselves far exceed what equivalent workers in Turkey would get. The Turkish Tax Payers are saying enough is enough. Rightly so. On one hand you want Turkey to continually give you more and more money but on the other hand you wish to be masters of your own destiny. This will never happen until you divert this money to the private sector and become self sufficient. The cuts are a necessary part of developing and letting go of the apron strings. However if the TC's decide that they don't want to adhere to Turkeys austerity measures they do have a choice? They can stop taking money from the hand that feeds them and look after their own! You cannot have your cake and eat it.

Military support and financial handouts are very different Pugwash. One can be done without the other. Nobody is suggesting that Turkey pull out, simply that the TC's live within their means and stop this exploitation.

Yfred, we are all aware of how the troubles started but how long will this victim mentality last? There is a need to deal with the here and now. Can you deny that the public sector is feasting at the expense of the private sector? What will the consequences of this be in terms of the TRNC's long term development?

Yfred....thanks for the offer, but I don't recall the trouble starting in Cyprus as a result of TC's wanting special status and demanding more than they were entitled to. That's what is happening now. Maybe they feel that they deserve some sort of positive discrimination as a result of being embargoed since 74 ? After 37 years isn't it time to stop playing the victim card, join the real world and move on?

and yet we see more delusions of grandeur! It would appear that the money given to the TRNC Public service employees would be better spent then, on providing an education for its own people to quicken the hundreds of years it would take.

The top and bottom of it is the fact that their are two many people in Northern Cyprus willing to accept back handers from Turkey, but giving nothing back in return,You reap what you sow in this life. And its time some of these lazy, non produtive, money grabbing civil servants, got of their fat arses, put there brains into gear, and gave something back to their country. I am at a loss to understand why anyone would want to bring back into play the events of 1960 onwards,as they have nothing whatsoever to do with the recent one day strike.Lets move on please.Sometimes when you live outside a country, you can obtain a better perspective of political goings on,as you have more of an open mind, and less blinkered view on matters, Paul.

Folks, lets' consider the banner shown in "yorhuzlu's" link. The banner states (in effect) "Is this wat is called being freed?". From this we should all be able to glean the essence of the problem, regardless of whether we have intimate knowledge of what it is like being a TC or a GC. It appears that people feel abandoned. Regardless of what they do for a living, it has been like being preserved in aspic since 1972. For any country to prosper it has to make the most of its resources. If we consider this against KKTC as an entity we can see that the most significant benefit it has been able to glean from its resources is the unregulated gambling facilities it provides. The ordinary (or indeed the well educated not so ordinary) TC has little scope for inputting into the economy. continued...

Maninland Turks: There has always been a general hint of emnity towards them. I would say that a lot of it is due to lack of understanding and reluctance to learn. However, it seems they always have one question that can silence most of the TC population: "But we are the ones who saved you". So, a nation of people who are distinct in culture - through time, more closely related to their GC inhabitants that the ones who came to their aid but now feel trapped in freedom (!). All it needed was that final straw...

paul "its time some of these lazy, non produtive, money grabbing civil servants, got of their fat arses, put there brains into gear, and gave something back to their country" Very good point and %100 agreed. "the fact that their are two many people in Northern Cyprus willing to accept back handers from Turkey, but giving nothing back in return" The 'security' Turkey has had from this part of the island on its own is priceless, let alone how many had been 'settled' here and now are selling what was not theirs for £millions and taking it back to Turkey(thanks to orders from Turkish government),also one must not forget how many mainlanders are one way or another living/working here.Have you been to local hospitals lately to see how many TCs are working there?I can assure you,no more then handfull. The rest are mainlanders working for contractors for basic wage, where they can't even afford to rent a place to live. Talk is not cheap my friend but FREE.

Total agreement Paul, whilst the comments are negative, the future of the TRNC is reliant on what happens now. The tourist industry is in dire need of promotion and financial support, the construction industry, as a result of gross incompetence is also in decline. Yet no thought is ever given to the future. Obviously this is because a few benefit but the majority (no matter what culture they are from because some seem to forget we are in the 21st Century and people get a fair days pay for a fair days work) struggle. This strike is about getting the most whilst deserving the least and staying the elite in an unfair society. Discrimination is accepted indeed encouraged. Give me one good reason why the public sector workers should have more than their fair share of the cake?

Yorgo...msg 43 Why do TC's need someone who speaks English to speak on their behalf . My point was that the TC's who lived through the troubles since 74 and stayed to support their country are a lot less vocal and seem to have less of a chip on their shoulder than those who fought the good fight in the intervening years from the comfort of a host country. I do not feel that you speak on behalf of "ordinary" TC's.

Yorgo....you are missing my point, but what's new ? Regarding the strike....do you think their grievances are justified ? And finally,I've always acknowledged the horrors of war and it must have been a scary and traumatic experience for you as a young boy.....I wouldn't wish it on anyone. However,my point was that it is more often the TC's who have spent decades in England,Australia etc since 74 who act like the biggest "patriots", and the ordinary TC's ( NOT the cossetted public sector friends and family workshy "elite" ) have no voice at all. How many years since 74 have you resided in the UK ?.....I'm not trying to be clever, I'm genuinely interested.

" Well, that's exactly what the Soviets used to tell Czecks, Poles, Hungarians until the late 80's. | I beg to differ about silencing Turkish Cypriots. If you knew the Cyprus history since 55, you would not make such a statement. They put us where we are and kept us there, hence they will have to support us till we are free. If they wish they can pull out their army and settlers. They are welcome to that. It's fair deal isn't it. Then they have evry right to stop paying, but till then the rent must be paid. |

going back to the thread on tcs striking which they have the right to do its the attitude to the mainland turks who are worked often 15 hours a day 6 or 7 days a week often not getting their rery basic minimum wage and then not getting them work permits. I think we all know that many jobs are considered menial by the turkish cyps and the menial work would never get done yet all I hear is the put down of mainland turks by the turkish cyps. This country is not a third world country but by what it dishes out with the rules and regulations and pittance of pay and yet a high cost of living it appears to be more of a third world country than the third world itself. I do not intend to get into the politics I dont know enough about it all all I would have expected as a human being that the workers for whatever work they do, be treated with rights regardless of their race /nationality. As an employer here before I would never have treated any employee differantly

| Very true., "its time some of these lazy, non produtive, money grabbing civil servants, got of their fat arses, put there brains into gear, and gave something back to their country" Also whats with the 13 month payroll? and retirement at 40-50 not sure which, but seems very young. Its time that they either adjusted or let someone else run it that wont squander all the tax money. Turkey is tightening the draw strings, which it should have done a long time ago. Yorgozlu," at the age of 10,digging trenches, filling sandbags with soil, carrying them up 43 steps, narrowly escaped death from machine gun fire......... 2 years of national service, first soilders of TRNC............" an ordinary TC or what! | Cronos, it is not the tenant that determines the price of a realestate it is the landlord. What is the pic of security. If they want we can go back to being a unitary state and allow the my cousins south of the border to join with Greece which unbelievably they still wish to do despite what Greece has become. Then what? would Turkey like that. I think not. Talk of grabbing the tiger by the tail. Dengtash has been doing it for years. The problem with Eroglu is that he is a conservative. And I'll say no more. |

Hi All Seems to me that the march on friday was devised by some people trying to look alot more important than they really are. People in general do not want a paycutt and this is very understandable.Who in their right mind would?! I can also see the other side of it too. Turkey is working to become a world power and they need to spend less in the current economic climate. Cyprus is a strategic piece of property, but there are some TC's left on it(whats left of em). So in order for them to keep the TC's mouth shut, they bribe em. Only, to notice, they are costing alot of money! Greeks got rid of some of them, but there are some left. So send in a bunch of criminals and get more TC's to move away! Great Idea!! Stubborn bunch these TC's, and, they seem to love that tiny island the Ottamans left them on hundreds of years ago! This is not the first time TC's have gone against a much larger nation in their differing views. Yes , they are stubborn like that and maybe spoilt, strange.
