I have driven a few times around to Guzelyurt in the last week and along the road side and surrounding land I have noticed what appears to be an abundance of fennel growing. However it does not seem to have the usual aniseed smell or the bulbous root that we more commonly eat. I wonder if this is a fennel where only the seeds can be used? Can anyone advise. Another similar question I have concerns locals I have seen picking armfuls of leaves (on stems) and some were just eating the stems straightaway? The only way I can describe the leaves are that they are mid green and fairly similar in shape to a geranium. I have no idea what these are, does anyone? I don't want to miss a delicacy, especially if it is free! Judy

The first one is Ferula communis or giant fennel. Technically not fennel at all; it has no taste or aroma. Wild fennel, Foeniculum vulgare, will flower later on and the seed is used in tea and the bulbby bit for flavouring. Your second plant is mallow. Gomec in Turkish. Used when young extensively by Cypriots.

The "acres of oil seed rape" is not rape at all. It's wild mustard and when it dies down after the seed pods have formed it is fed to animals.
