7 years and aggregated a further 3 years with the Army in the 1970s. The world is too turbulent for any long term planning. If in the course of time property in Cyprus lost then bridges very singed.

We have our villa in the KKTC and plan to live there for a very long time. Also thinking of buying a villa in Egypt (hmmm at the moment) and buying a cottage in the Lake District. We don't like to be fixed to one place. Get bored

Never Permanently. No. Hi LaptaMike, i lived in Alexandria for 4 years lovely place and lovely people, a bit iffy at the mo tho. I personally would keep away from Cairo too hot, dusty n way overcrowded. My choice would either along the North coast toward El Alamein or down the Red sea coast toward Hurghada.

| 1. Holiday Home last 4 years happy and love visiting. 2. Will keep visiting and enjoying our holiday apartment. 3. Don't think i would ever sell up totally in the UK nice to have options. Could i live there full time? love the thought of it, but in reality i'm not sure, it's a massive decision and in my opinion some people don't give it enough thought before jumping in with both feet and then become very unhappy. | As one who featured in a TV programme a couple of years back, most people who saw the programme know about my husband and me. We have been here as temp res for 7 years and for all that he thought he wanted to go back to U.K, there is little there to lure us. Lousy weather, rising prices, friends and family mainly dead or moved, but we were in Australia before here and I would go back there were it possible. But for now, in spite of the challenges etc, there are many good things to make us glad we are here. Of course we would change many things were we able, but let';s face it, the U.K could do with a lot of changes and we cannot change those either. As to Health insurance as my husband is 81 the Premiums are through the roof, so we trust in God and the state system which is affordable. If not, as Alan says 'A jump from the roof could solve any health problems! . Ever the optimist. |

We have been here over 5 years. We are planning to stay. We sold up in the UK as we didn't want an easy route out calling to us... we thought it better to commit - we still think that. Getting busier and busier working with nature.

The only thing I really miss here in TRNC is abundant Wildlife, as is, back home ,To walk along the beach amongst all the garbage and not even see a Seagull or an Oyster-catcher or Cormorant is quite soul destroying,We are(my Wife and I). members of WSPA, CWF ,and Maximus Elephant Foundation...We look forward to our yearly trip to our Wildlife sanctuary in Guernsey......

we would go if we could. Not because we do not like the place . We love it warts and all. However its so hard to make a living here. We exist. I want to go somewhere where talent is rewarded . Also I miss my family so much. However its not looking likely unless we can sell the restaurant and get money to take the dogs.

Family seems to be the big draw inmany people's liv es, but for those who do not have that draw, then North Cyprus holds a greater fascination. The ideal is to have neough money to commute and have the best of both worlds, but for people such as Lilli and many others who work to live, such a luxury is denied. But isn't it encouraging that in all the doom and gloom one hears about ex pats and North Cyprus, there is a large bunch who are HAPPY! Terrific. Maybe Eroiglu should give a medal to all those who stick up for this place as being a good place to be.

Amazing the folks who have burnt their bridges with the UK but will head back for free healthcare and still draw their pensions ;-) Lived there for 4.5 years For us there was more reasons to leave than there were to stay at the time

Stubs, You seem to forget that those of us who draw their UK pension or use UK health care have contributed more to the UK than a lot who now drain the resources. We have paid our NI and taxes (and still continue to do so) in many cases fought for their country and are less of a burden on the UK than most living there!

Halfull Ex-pats who head home for healthcare treatment ARE a huge drain on resources. Anyone who is not domiciled in the UK , regardless of origin, is not entitled to free healthcare. The arguement that they have paid into the system for years is no longer valid as whilst paying into the same system, they had the use of the health care system then. Just merely and observation that many claim by saying "yes" that they burned their bridges but at the same time still draw there pensions and use the healthcare from the country that they claim they have burned their bridges too. http://www.adviceguide.org.uk/index/family_parent/health/nhs_charges_for_people_from_abroad.htm

martinD41 & Stubs So anyone wherever they live are no longer entitled to NHS care once they stop paying NI is what your saying? Because retired here or UK we all stop paying contributions when we stop working. So if retired then we have paid our dues. Burning bridges means different things to different people, and no one said they disowned or rejected UK as their homeland.

Stubs So you think that people who have paid into the system for 40 odd years are a drain on society, I have never heard such a load of bullshit in all my life. The idle bastards who have never worked a day in their life. Unmarried mothers (by their own choice) who have kids by different fathers, and have houses and all and sundry paid for by the state. One mother in the papers last week on £30000 a year benefits. The eastern europeans who can now get child benefit for kids who are not in the UK. The asian community who are now in their third generation who are still having multiple kids. And before any one jumps at this, I am not a raciest just stating a fact. THESE ARE THE DRAIN ON SOCIETY. I noticed in a previous thread you said that any one not living in the UK should not get heating allowance it seemd to me you have a downer on people who are older than your 37 years. The last government has caused a lot of these problems by making it better not to work than work

My daughters have been told that I am to be buried here and if they fall off the perch before me, then I will attend their funerals if they wish to be buried in TRNC ! ( tongue in cheek !!!) I NEVER wish to go back to England again for any reason whatsoever. Bridges burned and all ties stopped.

wattys messages 89 & 90. Very well said. I could not agree with you more. It makes my blood boil that some people think that those who have retired abroad are not entitled to benefits for which they have paid throughout all their WORKING lives. As it is, I have to wait 8 months after my 60th birthday to claim my state pension and this is on a sliding scale so that women born after that will have to wait even longer, by which time, as you rightly point out, there will be no 'pot' to p...s in or anything else in, but it is apparently OK for those who have never contributed a penny to the country's economy to demand (and get) every bloody benefit going. I work for the NHS in an area where there are large communities of both Eastern Europeans and Portuguese and also a large number of single mothers so I know a little about what goes on in this respect.

Well that went ever so slightly off topic in true 44 style, just when it looked like one thread may actually stay on topic.

Jeannie I had a post office for 30 years and there was lot lot more payed out in benefits than pensions. There was a family (english) who were on third generation benefits taking approx £5000 a week every week and never paid a penny piece into the system, Stubs and people like him don't want to know this or they don't believe it is happening. I believe if you paid your dues in the UK, you are entitled to healthcare in the UK if you live there or not.

wattys - yes, I know. My husband worked for Post Office Counters for a number of years. I must admit, I didn't believe what was happening until he enlightened me. Saints - apologies.

Halfull Paying into a system for numerous years does not guarantee free medical care for life. Try and register at a doctors surgery in the UK with your TRNC address. It does NOT entitle free medical care just because of past payments but is to do with where a person is domiciled. Do your own research to see that its a fact. If you dont agree speak to your former local MP. Wattys As for the heating allowance why should someone not living in the UK be entitled to the heating allowance when they choose of their own volition to live abroad. The heating allowance is for those who need it in the UK not those who want it abroad. I'll bet there are also several families in the TRNC who currently claim family allowance and tax credits etc. Yet another drain on resources.

Stubs - your first sentence in message 100. I am aware that you would be unable to register at a doctor's surgery with a TRNC address, for example, and, as you rightly point out, it is all down to where you are domiciled. By the same token, you CAN, of course, register at a GP's surgery with an address in the UK and it does not matter how long you have lived in the UK - two days, two weeks, etc. etc., you are then automatically entitled to free health care. Incidentally, the heating allowance is not just for those who NEED it; it is not means tested, as far as I am aware. Or perhaps you think it should be means tested? That way, people who have saved for their old age and been prudent would not be entitled. One less 'drain on resources' perhaps?

Jeannie Final say on the subject from me to keep the thread on topic. You are correct about the address part but if some have "burnt their bridges" as they claim then they will not have a address. Secondly heating allowance is not means based that too is correct but it is for those who reside in the UK, not those who live abroad. People who live abroad by receiving have not informed the government of the UK that they are domociled abroad............. Again apologies for going off topic but just wanted to answer the points made

Stubs - many thanks for your reply, which I have only just picked up. Without going into too much detail and thus taking the thread further off topic, I think you and I are like-minded folk I note your comments. Kind regards. Jean Admin - thanks for your indulgence
