Environmental penalties come into force in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus as of today. The Minister of Tourism, Environment and Culture Kemal Dürüst told a press conference that any individuals or institutions that breach environmental laws and regulations will be subject to penalties from now on. The Minister of Tourism, Environment and Culture Dürüst announced that a new era of environmental policies lies ahead in the Republic as 2011 has been declared as the year of environment.

He noted that a large group of 500 volunteer environmentalists will be formed in the coming days who will notify the Environmental Department and the police regarding violations of environmental regulations. Reminding that many tourists are expected to arrive in the TRNC this year, Minister Dürüst said that sustainable environment is a leading factor in satisfying the tourists and making the TRNC a place for universal dialogues. Dürüst also introduced the logo for 2011 Environment Year and said slogans on the logo will keep changing to give different environmental messages.

So all the ravines and countryside are going to be cleaned up? Excellent news!! So when does the mass education of the populace begin or have they not thought about that aspect of the problem!

I hope it's not all hot air and bluster to try and promote tourism. If they are really serious then the clean up needs to start immediately....and not just the beaches and "beauty" spots. As Quarmby said, as well as the phhysical action of cleaning up, education is the key, and the local populace need to really change their mindset about litter and tipping. Regarding the ravines....I do worry in particular about these areas ever being cleaned up, because it is so easy to tip rubbish into them, but it is a logistical and technical nightmare to get it back out again.

Year of the environment Mmmm; so yesterday and today the Shayna Beach Club and Cornaro signs were moved across the road and because a tree obscured the lower Shayna sign, ever so slightly, it was cut down. Very environmentally minded!

'He noted that a large group of 500 volunteer environmentalists will be formed in the coming days who will notify the Environmental Department and the police regarding violations of environmental regulations.' Well there you go. At last a chance for all those that have been so vocal about the 'environmental' problems in the TRNC. Now is your chance to get involved. I guess you will all be queuing up to offer your services. Then again I doubt it.

Good point Dave. I wonder how many people will apply to be a 'volunteer environmentalist'.

What I don't understand is that it's already written in the constitution; why leave it until now to do something about it? Protection of the Environment : Article 40 Every person has the right to live in a healthy and balanced environment. No real or legal person shall drain or dump into the sea or into any dam, lake or river, for any purpose whatsoever, any liquid, gas or Solid matter which is of such a nature as to cause harm to human health or to endanger marine life and resources. It shall be the duty of the State, and of the real and legal persons to develop the environment, to protect environmental health and to prevent pollution of the environment.

Tootie..msg 13.....a good question! AJ....are you blaming the environmental issues prevalent in the TRNC on the reluctance of Cyprus 44 members to get involved in cleaning up the Island? Is that really what you are saying? I know it is your adopted homeland AJ, and you regularly shout down anyone who dares to criticise any aspect of it, but this is just ridiculous. If things are wrong in the TRNC then admit it....stop making excuses all the time and trying to deflect the blame.

Tootie Do you want me to name them all? It could take a long time but I am sure they all know who they are. Although I would say that they are only taking on 500 volunteers so those with real convictions should offer their services straight away.

Cronos, I don't think AJ was particularly pointing the finger at members on here. He was just generalising.

Perhaps they should make a start by issuing the 500 new personel with a rake and a sack and deploying them to clean this disgracefully filthy place up. Failing that, I don't believe a word of their 'good intentions' - never mind promises. Of course, they are 'putting the cart before the horse' - firstly, they need to start educating the populace to desist from dumping their rubbish where it's most convenient - i.e., roadsides and beaches and picnic areas. I live opposite a large secondary school. The kids chuck their rubbish on the road, despite the council rubbish skip being 4 metres from where they all congregate. Who cleans this trash up daily? Muggins here! In my day, at school, we'd have got 'six of the best' for throwing down a single sweet wrapper! You wouldn't be doing that again when you remember that after a sound caning you couldn't sit down for a fortnight!

AJ....that's good to hear and you would be setting a great example. You forgot to comment on your TC neighbours....let us know how that goes ! I won't be volunteering as we sold up after suffering at the hands of the TRNC legal/property system.

AJ are you saying you have not used your initiative up to now? Some of us were doing this years ago but we never crowed about just got on with it and only to see our endeavours were totally wasted by the dumping of litter only an hour after our clean ups. so what will change AJ?

CT or TC Neighbors ? I do my bit by taking my rubbish home and not throwing it out the car window. Also I dont flick my tab ends out the window into the under growth during the summer months.

I don't think the idea is to actually clean up the rubbish, that would cost money, it's just a way of collecting fines. We all know where the rubbish is, it doesn't need any volunteers for that, we'd all tell them for free!

AJ as I said previously some of went for it years ago and of course nobody should ignore it. Unfortunately the TC's have this habit of saying what everyone wants to hear but not so forthcoming on its implementation. Hope I am proved wrong this time!
