I think the internet speed for your connection is all important. What is the recommended minimum speed? Is 512 Kb/s sufficient? I doubt it. ismet

Connection speed is critical for STREAMING video content, that is you go somewhere, click on a button to watch something and it starts playing within a minute or less of you clicking. for this sort of content 512kb/s is probably not sufficent though it does depend on the content you view. I would say a reliable 1mb/s connection is the minimum for most common streamed content (iplayer, 4od, itv plyer etc) however for downloaded content, that is content that you select for download, then wait hours or days for it to finish downloading before you watch it, then download speed is not critical. It will determine how long it will take to download before you can watch the content, the slower your internet connection the longer to download. There is a vast range of both streaming and downloadable video content available, legal and illageal on the internet.

Hippo For BBC iPlayer or ITV Player and other UK based online TV services you will need some kind of VPN service to make it look as if you are using a UK based ISP, or these services will not work. You can get paid for VPN services from around 5 pounds per month and there are some free alternatives as well, some with ads to pay for the service and some without.

I use Expat Shield on a 1MB connection. In the morning I am able to stream live tv from BBC I Player with little or no buffering. Not so good in the afternoon/evening when more users are on the system. 2MB connection or better is probably best if you want to watch around the clock. Regards Paul

Nethouse also other a free UK VPN to their customers. We just use ITV or BBC player to watch whatever, and normally buffering is minimal, if nethouse VPN is down there is 6ms as an alternative.

Sorry to ask what is probably obvious to some. Is connecting pc to tv just a case of plugging in an HDMI cable or is there more to it?

If both your TV and your PC have hdmi connectors then yes this is the best and easiest way to connect them. For sound you will need to set either the media player you use to use HDMI output for sound, or set windows to use it as default output for sound.

I use Extend as my ISP, I have so far tried four different VPNs including the one Hippo is talking about and I have been unable to connect to any of them. It has been suggested that extend are blocking my connection to the VPN, does anyone know if this is likely to be the case or is there a setup problem with my computer/router etc? Also, even though I have a 1Mbps connection this is so unreliable and a speed check usually shows about 300kbps, with no landline adsl is not a solution, are any of the other ISPs more consistant in their speed? Thanks

I believe Extend DO block this connection and you have to specifically ask them to open it...... don't know why. I'm with Nethouse with a 1 meg connection but it's pretty hopeless really for streaming and I gave up and just download now. Had them check all sorts but couldn't get it any better, spent more time buffering than viewing. Compass

| Just tried to help an Extend customer use my free VPN.. but as soon as it connects - and it DOES connect successfully - within seconds they get kicked off :( Sorry, Extend - you are the Worst ISP in 'TRNC' re stopping folk from using my VPN.. | I use a VPN and I am also using Extend. I have no problems with Extend blocking my VPN connection. It costs me £5 per month for this VPN which is from My Private Network https://www.my-private-network.co.uk/index.php/en/get-started |

juliamoons re 22 IF you can say - where are you located? Folks located to the east of Kyrenia/ Girne seem to be particularly affected. If MPN works my connection would work - we use the same criteria.

mmm... I am located East of Girne and I was one of the people that tried to connect to your VPN with the same result that it couldn't stay connected, my private network is one that we have also tried, but with the same problem.
