Ileli Supermarket next to Startlings gives a discount, depending on the amount you spend. It says outside that it is 10% on 150 lira, but in fact seem to be giving some sort of discount on any amount. The supermarket is much bigger than it looks from the outside and has some good buys.

craig2536,a very good idea, i used to shop in tesco but found their prices, for basic foods going up every day,(their motto is every little helps)but they dont say who, could it just be tesco.what`s the old saying look after the kuros and it will look after the ytl.if people shop around it will also help the little shops as well by bringing in customers.

We arrived back from NC yesterday afternoon. We were very surprised at the rate that food and drink have gone up at least 40% since our last visit in Feb. We got to speaking to a bank employee (English) married to a TC with a young son. She told us that she found it really hard now to make ends meet and that's with her husband working also. NC is not a cheap destination any longer.

come_on_aylin Just find it so much more civilised being able to get what I WANT at reasonable prices the pork chops are yummy had them with spare rib sauce on . I would prefer to shop in the north but the prices are just not on it does appear some shopkeepers are buying in the south and selling in the north. I know not how the likes of bells foods cash and carry ( cheapest prices in town ) go on last time i was there they wanted 5 ytl for batchelors musy peas 1.10 euros (1.99ytl). Needless to say I did not buy.

Yep have to agree, prices are on the increase, even locals are feeling the pinch, a friend of mine works 0700-2300, delivering cement and has just taken a 2nd job too, the money lenders are cashing in @40% interest.

"am i being unkind here , but are things really that bad ????" If prices have gone up 40% since Feb, and unless his income has gone up , then obviously for Mr Average ,things are bad. Not many of us can take that sort of hit with a smile. People in UK are feeling the pinch with 25% on fuel and 10% on food, averages out at 18% for both.So am thinking how would people in UK do if rises averages out at 40%. Wonder when Lidl's will open in Girne? but to answer the question, are things bad, depends on your circumstances. For me 'yes'. For Bill Gates 'no'.

Nige, can I ask you, are the mushy peas in a can? I love mushy peas but I buy the dried ones and soak them overnight although you can buy dried ones which only require a couple of hours soaking. Sorry, I dont know the price. Oh I feel hungry now!

i posted this just as an idea to try and help each other, money is money. I think we all work hard for it, so why not make the most of what we have. We all know there is not a tremendous choice of products here on the island. Look after the pennies and the pounds look after themselves.

the butcher I mentioned in the earlier posting is selling lamb at 14 ytl a kilo, I think the cheapest I have seen anywhere else is 17 ytl a kilo, I think that is a possible saving of 20 percent. Why not if its there on offer take advantage.

I agree with Girne 29 Of course people will notice the difference with such rises and people will shop within their means. We are level headed enough to know that as prices rise in the north, so are prices rising elsewhere. Certailnly in the UK - if we had the choice I know where we would rather be...........................somewhere hot! At the moment we only holiday in N Cyprus, but I am always considering which is the cheapest supermarket to shop in when we are out there. So an excellent idea for this forum to compare prices with Supermarkets.

reply to message 15, Nige, I thought you were going to mention the bi-carb, don't use it, its not needed. Oh and soak the peas in cold water overnight. Just gently bring the peas to the boil the following day and simmer till soft. Try it and let me know what you think.

nige there is another supermarket close to the border just down from superhome. the butcher in there does the best sausages just like english ones. i always find it funny that sausages are more expensive than spare ribs in the south? orphanides always has loads of offers on. especially for anyone who is a chocoholic! our tc friend loads up everytime we go. my dogs also love the homebrand dog food, which is cheeper than the slop they sell here.

That's better Nige.... you'll need plenty... I would also add the cost of the fuel and insurance into your sums for going south to shop, otherwise it's false economy... Wall's Sausages seem to have disappeared from the freezers.. I prefer others but the children love'em in a toad in the hole (not summer fodder I know but it's coming)... anybody know where they are to be had?

Well Nige, depending on the rate of exchange this is not neccessarily true... often we have done the maths only to find that it is very marginal if not exactly the same (limited to the petrol stations between Metehan and Ikea as drivimg about to find "cheap" petrol goes against the grain) Also don't forget that mileage on your car also costs you quite a lot in lost residual value in addition to the fuel! Apart from the impact on the environment of unneccessary journeys.... It's this kind of lack of judgement that leads many folk here to think they are getting bargains they are not.... 1.00 EUR = 1.8115 TRY

First of all apologies to anyone who went in search of Kerrygold at 4.99ytl, my mistake - it was a 500g tub of Clover for 4.99ytl, still on offer in Lemar. On Fuel Prices: Cheapest prices between Metahan and Ikea at AGIP on left hand side before set of traffic lights before Orphanides(!?!) Unleaded 1.039 Euro = 1.89 ytl Eurodiesel 1.099 Euro = 2.00 ytl Diesel 0.999 Euro = 1.82 ytl Exchange rate 1 Euro = 1.82 ytl Prices in North for same are 2.25, 2.20 & 2.00 ytl respectively. Savings for 40 litres are 14.40, 8 & 7.20 ytl respectively.

Navek? 25 YTL each loose! are they mad... or is it you? Biscuits do seem very cheap here... I wonder if that's because they are a staple food to locals with their incredibly sweet tooth... I see the stacks of incredibly sweet cakes in the shops see them buying them by the kilo and wonder if they are storing up a huge dietary problem for their young'uns In the UK of course biscuits are taxed as a luxury food... I remember McVities bust up with the Excise men over the tax not paid on Jaffa Cakes.. which the Excise men instisted were a biscuit and McVities claimed were not... and that they were a cake hence the name... The judge in his/her wisdom asked for the recipe and concluded that as it included egg they really were cakes and therefore zero rated like all non-luxury food stuffs.... Cakes != luxury, biscuits = luxury... never quite understood this given some of the humble biscuits and luxurious cakes.... Maybe this is fall-out from the French Revolution.... tax their cakes and lose your head! Gooligan, how big was the bag? Were they wrapped in a silk purse?

All this rampant materialism. My grandad was taken prisoner by the Japanese at the fall of Singapore and spent the rest of the war as a slave on the Burmese railway. When he was freed he only weighed 6 stone, and all he was given was a bag with a balloon and a packet of Haribos. Some people just don't know they're born.
