Being more a fan of gambling than of rugby, I decided to have a good look at the chances of the six teams competing this year, and I must say that Ireland do look a good bet @ 3\1 to win the six nations.

Though they play 3 games away from the new Lansdowne Road, the two home matches are against the favourites England and France and if they win both of those they can probably get away with a slip-up in Cardiff.

Only time will tell, and I accept that I will look a complete fool if they get turned over in Rome on Saturday.

Be interesting to hear the unbiased thoughts of others.

Michael....from England.

If only they used a proper ball, it could be half watchable but with that funny shaped ball, it's like watching paint dry.

Ireland are dealing with a lot of injuries for their first game in Italy but if they win this which in my opionion they will get much stronger. Playing France and England in the new Aviva Stadium will be a big advantage to Ireland and this was the same fixtures home and away when we won the grand slam. Not bad odds either you can buy me a pint out of your winnings

Would appreciate your thoughts on who will win it though, as you seemed to have ruled out Ireland.

For Italy to win 1 game 11\8

To win 2 games 12\1

To win 3 games 100\1.....think it best to stop there.

The Irish hate being 'favourites' and would much rather be written off as the underdogs. That's when they are most potent. This is a year too far for some of the team and high time some of the younger generation got a cap. Dead man's shoes though!

Irish will not win and I expect England to win comfortably tonight. Mind you I always expect that! I can't help it when I grew up Wales were the powerhouse and beat us to often. My loathing has never gone away. Rugby is the only time i will support Scotland.......... When they are playing Wales!

Is the real men you are talking about anything to do with the Rugby World Cup ? A feast of scintilating rugby with teams from all over the world competing for the ultimate prize, the highlight ALWAYS being New Zealand bottling it yet again (normally against the French).

Or is it some other event I may have overlooked?

I enjoy that particular highlight as well CJ, though it's not quite as good as seeing those chippy convict-descended wombats going out to England...

The word is PHEW!!!!

I wonder how you felt about your bet with 5 minutes to go Michael??

Ireland = Too old, too complacent.

Old Italian ill discipline is gone. They were well organised and very unlucky.

Referee was absolutely shite.

A good weekend's rugby but on the evidence of the first set of games I'd say that the best two teams at the moment are France followed by Scotland.

One of the best matches I've ever seen.

Ireland certainly got out of jail, though they were marginally the better team, though they must improve to progress. Their next match is at home v the French, who looked a bit suspect through the middle against the Scots.

Not so confident now, as all I have is a screwed-up betting slip retrieved from the bin for my sins.
