I can well understand the dangers of starting an unintentional fire, however, during the winter months when the vegetation is wet are we allowed to have controlled bonfires? Olive prunings need to be got rid of some how, and I have been told its illegal to burn anything without a written permit? Who should I approach to find out the rules?

Why don't you do us all a favour. Chop them up into small bits and spread them back into the soil. Its the best thing for it.

Thats exactly what I do.! Bonfire create potash, which returns the goodness back to the soil. Maybe you can come around and help me cut up my olive prunings. I will lend you my pruners, estimated time would be several weeks. !

I, too was told (by ex-pats) that you need permission from a) belediye b) police c) fire brigade and d) forestry department (??)

Could not get much sense out of Alsancak belediye (my fault for not speaking good enough Turkish), but enquiries among my Cypriot friends simply raised a few smiles and the comment 'do you really think that every bonfire you see has received 4 separate permits?'

Certainly common sense dictates that no-one should light a bonfire when all around is tinder -dry (i.e. around May to October), that adequate water should be available in case the fire gets out of control, and that the bonfire should be supervised throughout the burning. Oh, and neighbours should, out of politeness, be advised so that washing etc is not affected.

I would just put it by the side of the road and ask the bellediye to collect - less hassle for everyone

PS I know how you feel, I'd love to have a good burn-up once in a while)
