| They're a timeless, charming and effective way to keep your home warm and inviting in the winter months. But the smoke from wood-burning stoves or open fires is as dangerous to your health as breathing in emissions from a car exhaust, research has revealed. Inhaling the invisible particles in the smoke can lead to fatal heart disease and cancer, toxicology experts warn. Until recently, little was known about the potentially harmful effects of breathing in smoke produced by open fires and wood-burning stoves or boilers. But the research by Danish scientist Professor Steffen Loft suggests the tiny airborne specks in the smoke can be a silent killer because they are small enough to be inhaled into the deepest parts of the lungs. | Wow! So all those non smokers who have wood burning fires are still in danger then? No more visits to places with open fires or wood burning stoves - not to mention calor gas heaters and parafin heaters - guess the only safe place to go is one where they are using air con instead????? Only a joke about the non smokers by the way - don't let it start another war, its not needed. You should always have a well sealed chimney anyway, lots of the open fires here leak gas through the cement as they have not been sealed properly. Wood burners are a bit better but the same applies - make sure they are well sealed. Like everything else in the world, its dangerous in the wrong hands and if not used properly - think safe please. |

| Thanks for the info. Typical that everything is good and bad. You keep warm and you get lung cancer. Nice one.Maybe death by hypothermia is the way to go! Choices, choices, choices. I use electric. The only thing that kills is my bank balance! Unless I stick my finger in it! |

| So how does one keep warm here if it is a health hazzard having a fire. We can sit in the sunshine to warm up but once the sun has gone the houses are very cold & damp. If you don't have gas central heating , you end up having electric heaters or calor which i don't like to be honest. Log fires do help & give some natural heat. They all seem to cost a lot here especially the electric! You just have to keep warm in the day wearing a few layers if your in the house, then sit in the Wintersun . Turn on the heating only at night for a couple of hours otherwise your inter-gas is gone within 10 days 2 week. All heating is a basic need just like water, why it has to be so expensive here I don't know as we get enough power cuts! |

| This a crazy report poorly targeted... the scaremongering nature tells me the researcher's grant must be up for renewal and the newpaper was short of good story lines. Viz "Until recently, little was known about the potentially harmful effects of breathing in smoke produced by open fires and wood-burning stoves or boilers." Well that's not true, this has been known for yonks! Furthermore "The full scale of the risk is not yet known" so he wants more money for research I take it this statement implies.... Then you read that he's really talking about people who sit round an open fire cooking on it like Native Americans and Ancient Britons... The closest we all get to that in Cyprus is the ubiquitous BBQ... now they can be a problem if poorly sited or misused. |
