Do you mean Greek or Greek Cypriot? Different regs for each, I would have thought.

Forget it. Even if the authorities here were prepared to re-register a GC plated car, and this is questionable, they would want a fortune in tax as they do on all imported vehicles. GC cars are very appealing as the prices are very low there in comparison with here but the government here are not obviously in favour of cheap motoring!

I know cars are cheaper to buy in south,but if you are living in TRNC I'd not recommend you to go that route.

An ex neighbour did it,got cought,350 tl fine and was told to take it over to south,he didn't,got cought again,this time the car was confiscated.I went with him to get it.3000 tl fine (reduced it to 1000 tl after about an hours hard arguing).He got his car, with custom officer drove it Metehan,crossed over..............

Is it worth the risk?

Besides,one island maybe,but 2 different countries!

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

according to friends of a friend, who live on the Medview homes complex at Safakoy, just past bogaz heading towards the Karpaz, all you need is a GC post office box and you can legally use a GC registered car in the TRNC. No need to pay any import duty. Bit dubious about it myself but he says that many of their neighbour's cars seem to prove their point.

msg 6;

If the intention is to dodge the system,I'm sure there are plenty other ways.But,how long for?

The mentioned person in msg 5 also had RoC adress as well as TRNC adress.

Your ins-outs would give everything away.

The use of a GC postal box as a means to 'legally' use a South registered car here is a myth. If you live here, and your ins and outs will clearly demonstrate this, then you will not have a leg to stand on with the authorities here in the North. Your car will be impounded at best and you will have to pay a fine to release the car from customs. You will then have to take the car back to the South and sign a document to say that you will never bring the vehicle into the North again - I speak from experience !! You can import a vehicle from the South but any import taxes will negate any saving that you made on the vehicle in the first place.

Buy the vehicle here in the North, there are always people leaving the island and a car can be got for a 'reasonable' price if you shop around.

It really isn't worth the risk.

The bottom line is that you would be required to register your GC plated car here in the KKTC, not a cheap prospect. Sell the car over there, and buy one here.

Message 6: no, sorry, this is nonsense. If you are running a GC car then you will need a Greek side address for it anyway for the purposes of road tax and insurance. Having a PO box on the other side makes no difference at all to how the customs here view GC vehicles. Two or three years ago, when there were a lot of GC vehicles here, the government instigated a clamp down on them and most people had to take them back to the other side and sell them there after paying a fine here. I suspect that, because this reduced the numbers to virtually nil, the authorities have not been looking too closely. If there is a rise in numbers again though, you may be sure that they will soon start getting very interested and take action.
