Quiz (02): Again I have divided a picture of (part of) an historic monument in TRNC in 10 rectangles. ▶ The questions: Where was the picture taken and what do you see on the picture? ▶ I'll fill one rectangle at random times - but there'll be no winner in this Quiz if in the end there are less than three empty rectangles to fill! Here and there I'll give a cryptic hint or some info... ▶ The prize in this Quiz: The first good (complete!) answer wins an invitation for two for an Historical Walk in Kyrenia. OK, here we go: expats and swallows, show your knowledge about Northern Cyprus... ▶ Click this link to view the picture: [ http://www.allcrusades.com/bb_webpages_04/05_quiz_02/tekst.html ] P.S. Difficulty of this Quiz: medium.

These are old columns cemented into the ground to form the spit out to the Chain tower in Kyrenia old harbour.

Perhaps cemented isn't the best term as they are sort of plonked there next to each other and filled in with stones (and more recently broken Efes bottles, plastic trash and discarded fisherman's kit).

RE msg 15, Donty: You've done it again..! Twice the winner* today: well done. It's obvious that I've to make theis C44 Quiz more difficult. (* Another hint in this thread: this is your day, I'd go to a Casino tonight - if I were you ). I've added some pics: ▶ click this link to view the pictures: [ http://www.allcrusades.com/bb_webpages_04/05_quiz_02/tekst.html ]. Some info about "the broken columns" - because they are not broken columns... They are Roman pied-de-stals (pedestal in English, if I'm right) or "cepi". They were taken from ancient Roman houses (around 200 AD) and were used for small statues or stauettes of Roman family gods. By the way: the Byzantyne "chain tower" in Kyrenia's old harbour, from ca. 1050-1100, is not original since around 1900. The stone top was rebuilt by the British colonial rulers of Cyprus - because a marble column that held the iron harbour chain was sunk down. (Pictures are on my web page). [MORE]

[CONTINUED] On the eastern side of the chain tower you can still see a part of the wall that linked the tower to the castle (from the Byzantine/Lusignan eras). OK, enough for today. I like to make the Quizzes - let me know if you want to read more! Prizes in this Quiz: 2x a Kyrenia Walk for two for Donty (you may take friends if you can find interested people). Good night all!

Wahey! I must admit that this side of the harbour is my favourite for photo opportunities so I know it fairly well. I also go fishing from a boat that is moored at the end of the 'new' chain tower I didn't think they were broken columns as they look complete but didn't know the terminology for them + you had said they were columns (msg 10) so I wasn't going to go against the flow ;) BTW. Do you know why the base of the tower has a big chunk out of it? It's quite photogenic and i'd love to know how it ended up in its present state? p.s. I'm not really a gambling man, though I have gambled and lost on a few crazy women in my time !
