Smoke and fumes from our open log fire are leaking from the chimney into the bedrooms upstairs, there is no obvious crack in any of the walls and the aircon unit is not on the chimney wall. Does anyone have any information about fitting a flue which would seal the chimney or any other advice? Aljanyoung

Aljan, The fumes will contain carbon-monoxide making this a quite dangerous situation. Akinlar can sometimes retrofit flues. The can be reached on 0533 836 9832 (Mustafa Bey)or 0533 861 7438 (Ibrahim Bey).

Drop a length of heatproof flexible flue (metal) down your chimney. Block the chimney at the bottom, leaving the flue open, and fill the chimney with sand/cement mix from the top. leaving the top of the flue open. Thats what we did with my brother-in-law's chimney in Cornwall and he had the same problem. Kirk on 0533 843 3001 should be able to help you.

Our first house in cyprus had the same problem. It turned out that the flue( a concret pipe) only went to the beadroom floor, so the smoke worked through the cut out brickwork for the electric wiring and come out through the plug sockets and the airconditioner. The builder did fix the problem by fitting two more lenghts of pipework. Pouring cement were the pipes joined and filling the out side of this new pipe with sand and fine gravel. problem solved in half a day

"Drop a length of heatproof flexible flue (metal) down your chimney." Any idea where you can buy this in the TRNC - remembering that a wood stove operating temp is between 300 and 600 degress it had better be "very" heatproof!!

The stuff is made for the job. Go to Akinlar on the right just past the Hirondelle roundabout, They are facing the road at Olivia apartments. Professionals need to do this job for you, the alternative is just too dangerous. carbon monoxide is a killer and kills very quickly

I expect this flexible flue is available from Yapi Markets. I have seen many TC bungalows with woodburner flues that include sections of this flexi-flue.

Many thanks to all of you, we will contact Akinlar. We have not used the fire since the problem started because of the health risk - thanks again. Aljanyoung

had the same problem discovered the metal heat plates in the back of the fire hadn't been fitted properly they were loose and allowing the smoke to go up through the walls tightened them up and no problems now

When fitting a chimney liner to a well used chimney,it is imperative to have the chimney swept before fitting the liner,The gap between chimney and liner can be filled with weak mortar, but this will mean a lot of extra weight in the breast....Better to fill the void with Rockwool.....Most chimney liners will stand temps of up to 900 degrees
