QUIZ (06): I have divided a picture of (part of) an historic monument in TRNC in 20 squares.

▶ The two questions: WHERE was the picture taken and WHAT do you see on the picture?

▶ I'll fill one or two squares at random times - but there'll be no winner in this Quiz if in the end there are less than five empty rectangles to fill!

▶ Here and there I'll give a cryptic hint or some info... Read the title of the thread for the first hint...

▶ The prize in this Quiz: The first good (complete!) answer wins an invitation for two for an "Historical Walk in Kyrenia".

OK, here we go again: expats and swallows, show your knowledge about Northern Cyprus...

▶ Click this (shortened but safe!) link to view the picture: [ http://is.gd/QmvmTG ].

P.S. Difficulty of this Quiz, on Moderator Bill's request...: VERY, VERY DIFFICULT...

P.P.S. All other Quizzes here: ▶ [ http://is.gd/MHl4g0/Overview_of_updates_of_AAAC_site_in_2011 ]

Good evening, Donty! Have you read my email yesterday?

P.S. I won't deny that it is Gazimağusa, the proud, "never conquered" city since the Ottoman conquest in 1570/71...

Hi Hans. Got your email thanks. Just trying to ensure Sunday 27th is free and whom is likely to attend with me. Should know in the next 24hrs and will give you a call.

Carmelite or Armenian Church because it's quite green around them (never went inside because of the unfriendly military signs so can't be sure).

P.s. Is it legal to wander around these two churches?

Donty: No...

(...) Is it legal to wander around these two churches? (...)

▶ I have been there many times to study the churches and the impressive Martinengo bastion, a medievalo military masterpiece, and have never had any problems. Now and then I've met military men (Turkish Army) there, but I was never sent away or worse - just greeted..! The gate used to be closed, but is now permanently open. If you plan a visit, don't forget the cemetery inside the cavalier on your right hand. Martyrs, who died defending Famagusta during the troubles, are buried there.

I "filled" some white squares on the Quiz-picture again:

▶ Click this (shortened but safe!) link to view the picture: [ http://is.gd/QmvmTG ].

(Hint - or maybe not?) Many (high) buildings (the ca 25 churches) in Famagusta were damaged during the 10 months siege by the Ottoman Turks in 1570/71. They fired about 150.000 iron cannon balls and stone missiles into the town, although many misfiring cannon and catapults (trébuchets) only hit the walls of the besieged town. Still visible: iron cannon balls that got stuck in the wall! The reason why most churches are heavily damaged on the South side and far less on their Northern walls is that the Ottoman Turks concentrated their attack on the weakest spots - between the Landgate (also known as Limassol Gate) and the Arsenal (now called Canbulat Gate and bastion after the commander who entered the town there).

I got the 365 clue as I knew that it is said there were 365 churches in Famagusta/Gazimagusa.

I got the missing letter clue as above

I've never done a proper tour of Famagusta so can do much more!!

Only other clue I have is that it looks to be south of Lala Mustafa Pasa Cami?

We do agree on Famagusta, but there are (or better used to be) circa 25 churches in the town. Btw not "365, one for every day of the year" as the lying tourist people try to make believe innocent expats.

There are several "unidentified buildings, possibly churches" (we'll never know their names or builders - we lack the documentation. Much got lost when the Ottoman Turks celebrated their victory).

In msg 20 you wrote: "Is it on Ali Pasa Sokak?" In msg 22 I answered No. So I have to persist, whatever our favourite Moderator says: the location is Famagusta allright, but where exactly..?

I'd love to do a tour of Famagusta if possible Hans? It's a fascinating place and I'd really enjoy learning more about the place.

I'd also like to offer one of my Kyrenia tickets to No1Doyen for all the encouragement and obvious enjoyment of these quizzes if that's ok?

No problem, Donty. But I'm afraid Bill lives in the most of the time, so your (accepted) proposal needs some careful planning. I live here and I can hardly afford to be seen with a Moderator. I'll consider to do a night tour.

My statistics tell me that we had readers in this Quiz from mainly TRNC and the UK, but also from outside Europe (USA, United Arab Emirates, Kazahkstan, Bahrein). Furthermore from Germany, Greece, Holland and Poland. Too bad most of them didn't join the Quiz as writers, but let's keep trying to raise the interest for (Northern) Cyprus' historic monuments!
