Has anyone tried the slingbox, could you please let me know how you got on

I'm coming out in April and cannot make up my mind, my gut feeling is it's not very good

RE msg 1, FulhamFan: (...) Slingbox (...)

▶ We use a Slingbox to 1: receive about 40 Dutch TV channels and another one to 2: receive a long list of British TV and Radio channels. Connection: 1Mb provided by Nethouse Networks. Verdict: 95% satisfied (I really should use a 2 Mb connection, but 1 Mb works).

P.S. With a Slingcatcher (ca 60 US Dollars) you can connect your computer (wireless) with a modern flat TV screen.

P.P.S. It's worth the money you pay!

Dear FF

re msg 1

Hans is testing a UK and Dutch TV connection and the secret is the UPLINK.. if you have a slow sending end - ( and even worse a slow receiving end ) you'll be VERY disappointed :(

The best test is to try slingbox on your wireless network at home.. you can control / watch what's on in another room and it should work GREAT..

Now, THAT is what you CAN expect if it is hosted on a FAST network ( you need at LEAST 3 MBits UP LINK) and that is impossible on current UK ADSL links...

Currently, there are very few folk in the UK with THAT sort of UPLINK.. and the internet in 'TRNC' is still flaky :(

I have a client in Barbados who SWEARS by Sling - since he went on a fast uplink.. he cancelled his Barbados TV sub and gets all the BBC / ITV stuff on a HD 47" screen in perfect clarity.. he is using the 'top banana' slingbox .

As Hans says, you gets what you pays for...

I don't think I've understood slingbox so could you explain

If you have slingbox how does it work ?

In the UK I have Virgin cable do you need to leave your cable on in the uk to control it what happens when those in the UK change the channels

When in TRNC I use Nethouse VPN for i player and download stuff that is not on iplayer so watch Tv when I want to a 10 pm airing in the uk is midnight in TRNC

Hi Wanderer

'all' a sling box does is allow you to remotely control and view a tuner installed somewhere else.. it is 'place -shifting'

So you could control your Virgin receiver and change channel - you have a s/w image of the virgin remote on your computer screen.

You don't need a VPN

You DO need a fast connection from the UK to send the data over the net to your receiving end

If you have a Virgin recordable box you can view when you want - same with SKY plus or BT Vision

You can use a Freeview or Freesat recorder and timeshift

The reason *I* have chosen to make a biz from this is because most folk in the UK / IRL don't have the fast enough uplink - so I host the receiver on a fast network.

Hi Mr mms, and DD

Thanks for your replys, I can get 30mb in the UK with virgin from a connection in my home office in the UK

all good so far and the best I can see is 2mb in NC not so good

I've done so much research and as far as I can see you need a good uplink and an even better down link

is there anyone from the UK who has tried it?

Hi Wanderer with the slingbox, you can sling your TV ie Sky, Virgin, ect via the internet

Hi mms

How much do you charge to sling your TV ? If I get a "catcher" can you guarantee a good service

Hi FF - the 30Mbits is the DOWN... ask 'em what you get UP.. Virgin are one of the worst for throttling heavy users and their uploads usually 'suck'

Most folk who try from the UK have to watch at a reduced resolution or windowed

My hosting service means you can get up to 9 MBits in HD quality - but that is NEVER gonna happen in 'TRNC' any time soon :(

Guarantee? You pay monthly in advance by credit card - it has been thoroughly tested and we haven't need to advertise and third party references have get me busy .

Try it from home and then compare how well it works using my network - if you ain't happy I'll buy your sling box/ catcher from you... you need to buy a slingbox solo .. the pro HD isn't worth it for watching in 'TRNC'

25 / GBP month for hosting. That pays towards for the 100MBit upload and the 'lecky and service to keep your service on line with a 99.7% up-time guarantee.

Best bet is to see it working in 'TRNC' - say at DD's - and judge for yourself ;)

RE msg 6, FulhamFan: (...) is there anyone from the UK who has tried it? (...)

▶ Do you think there are special UK channels for non-Brits in TRNC..?! "Anyone from the UK" will - via a Slingbox - watch the same programs as I do..! As a non-Brit or worse 'a foreigner' I feel quite insulted...

FulhamFan: The screen quality of the programs we can watch from the UK and Holland is usually EXACTLY the same. When you are in TRNC you are welcome to judge yourself in our house.

Hi Joe, it was great to talk to you...

I think you should test the service when in 'TRNC' and THEN subscribe.. just to be sure that your connection there is up to the job...
