Davidoff I think we all know that some compensation will be payable going forward and with reunification we dont know what that will be. When the unknowns have disappeared there should be considerable appreciation in the property values in NC as there will be more people prepared to purchase. It is a beautiful place but overdevelopment could spoil it. What I dont understand is why the end buyer should suffer the whole compensation bill afterall SWB and someone else will have made a profit before you so perhaps a backdated Capital Gains Tax is appropriate on all deals. Although I would only buy a new build I could not purchase an old propert which may have been stolen from the Greeks the Turks Richard THe Lionheart or the Ottoman??? who really owns NC?? I guess although I am buying new who originally owned the land??

If the police catch someone in possession the person will have to convince officers they didn't know they were handling stolen goods otherwise they face being charged and prosecuted. I think paying compensation as civil remedy is much more preferable than criminal proceedings. After all, anyone who buys a property in North Cyprus knows full well what they are doing and what happened to the legal owners of most of the land. |

The compenstion bill, if it go`s ahead Would this depend on what you have bought. i.e. if you bought just land would you pay a % on the land for what you paid for it? same system for a villa, and what happens if you have bought a flat or villa on a complex? I also through that there was a pocket of money set aside from the goverment for any compenstion. Paul&Kay

Money set aside from the government is wishful thinking, IMO. They're sking and the priority is their own people and the Turks.

pvt pike msg 11 everybody in england is living on property most definately "stolen" from nameless celts in the 6th century besides, the queen holds absolute title... as regards cyprus, selling-on a villa or flat is not depriving anyone since the trnc supposedly has laws in place to stop anyone else claiming residential rights... although the property could hypothetically figure in any peace deal as regards the jurisdiction of courts in the south over the north this notion fell in 2006 at the high court although the validity of article 10 has not yet been "finally" endorsed by the court of human rights lastly while not claiming to occupy one person's "moral high ground" I very much doubt people will be falling off chairs because of it at nameless dinner parties in the home counties can we move on perhaps? andre
