Hi all

We bought a Villa in Karsiyaka last October and are returning for the first time next week.

1. Is it better to hire a car from Ercan, or get a taxi and arrange a hire car once in Karsiyaka and who would you recommend?

2. We have quite a large shopping list, basically utensils, crockery general household goods and some furniture (bed). Any recommendations. We were told it might be worth crossing the border to go to IKEA?

3. Our property Management company have informed us that the water pressure is low in the Villa, and we may require a new pump. They have provided a quote which seems quite high, again any ideas, recommendations?

Thanks in anticipation

I had a problem with water pressure and got Mr Pipe to put in a pressurised system cost around £400 last year, worth every penny. Mr Pipe is on main coast road on the left around Catalkoy area

Kitchen goods etc, well worth a trip to Ikea, but you will not be able to bring furniture back from there.

Homefront are very good for furniture and their beds are very reasonable.

1. Most of the car hire firms to pick up/drop off at Ercan and it will work out a lot cheaper than a taxi. Just get a few quotes with the Ercan pick up included and decide who you like.

2. IKEA is OK if you like IKEA but remember that it is illegal to import furniture from the South. Many do but some get caught and there is no appeal - you lose the lot. Probably OK for the smaller items but I don't think you can hide a bed coming back.

3. A water pressure problem can be many things from dirty tap filters (quite common in a new house as dirt works its way through the system) to there not even being a pressurised system installed. It may not affect the whole house, just upstairs or downstairs, or just the taps - so ascertain exactly what is meant by low pressure and then ask specific questions on here. If the villa is new, and depending on who the builder is, I would talk first to them about it - and if the builder won't help only then pay for independent advice.

Glenn Msg 1 - Welcome home.

1 John is right far easier to drive home from and back to the airport at the end of the trip. We do arrange car rentals from Ercan if you want us to just call us 01594 544 077 or email info@flightholiday.co.uk (we offer two different rental companies).

2 You will find simple good products available in many shops including ones in Lapta all the way into Girne not stylish is the soldiers shop in Girne just off the high street (I can't recall it's name someone will). You are not kitting out your main home but a place you will be in some months each year; I'm saying spend wisely it's tempting not to. Also try Tunc or T&C they have some quality goods

3 John in Msg 4 is spot on again - I would not worry about it till you are home and have done all the small DIY checks such as are stop valves half on and are filters, etc clean & washers in good condition. You might be happy with the pressure as it is.

When we first bought our villa we just bought everything we could get into suitcases. We used the plastic bags you suck the air out of and its amazing how much you can get into a suitcase linen wise.

You can buy everything over in NC some prices are higher though but with us we just bought things in UK as and when we saw them and therefore saved loads of time when we arrived. All kitchen utensils, bed linen, towels and bath mats etc. Pillows bed covers etc etc. We even bought the dvd player small TV, tablemats in fact any thing that would fit in suitcases well packed. So by the time we had visited a few times we had all the basics. We did do a trip to the south and picked up all crockery glasses in Ikea and larger pots and pans (we bought frying pans and smaller bits out with us.) We also went to superhomes in the south (much like homebase in the uk for things like ironing boards airers iron kettle and toaster.

We did all our curtains through Mermaid and they were so helpful and patient with changed instructions etc. Furniture wise we used Botanica and Homefront who made all our sofas and massive floor cushions which we use outside.

We alsways hire car and pick it up from Ercan and drive ourselves so we can stop of and get shopping and a meal on the way through. We use Baspinar for our cars.

You need to go to the bottom of the Cyprus44 index page and click on the "For Sale" link. Grannygrump and many others have posted on there. It is the best place in Cyprus to find 2nd hand stuff for your home.

Are you here yet? - Did you suss the water pressure problem??

Just wanted to add that you won't be able to take a hire car from the north to the south for that Ikea trip.

If you are going to be in TRNC then why not support them rather than give your business to the GCs who are doing nothing to help you or the rest of us?

Everything is available in the north just look back through old posts using the search facility at the top.
