Some of you might have read last week how walking in the mountains I came across 2 dead dogs and a fox and 4 packets of poison. The next day 5 of us went back up there armed with marigold gloves and bin bags to pick up all the rubbish and for me to photograph the animals. We picked up 20 bags of rubbish and about 15 packets of poison, animal fat laced with it and wrapped in tin foil. I can not sit by and do nothing anymore. I have started a Facebook page called Pets Against Poison so that we can all work together letting people know where poison is found so we can protect our pets. If you are not on Facebook, I have set up an email address, so that I can sent an e-mail around as soon as I hear of any poisonings, if you are interested in that please e-mail petsagainstpoison11@gmail.com. I will try and have my own sign in on this forum, as I am not frankedad but his partner - Sarah. Please pass this on to anyone you know who has pets in NC. One step could lead to a revolution.

Lovely idea, but if we get more revolting (in terms of revolution!) we will all get chucked out. KAR is already hot on this and isn't there some way we could all join forces with them. And at the end of the day it is the Government that must do something baout availability of poison. Until then, it seems to be the case of 'after the horse has bolted'. Maybe the Facebook page will do something, but I still feel it needs to be a larger body which carries some weight with the authorities.

But any drop in the bucket must be worth it.

Does anyone know if it isn't, in fact, agents of the Government trying to address the appalling feral problem?

Thank you for being proactive and I applaud your effort to pick up the poison. I for one feel like a prisoner in my house and garden with my dogs.

I agree Maz, but I am not sure how much us Brits can get done, the thing is to involve the locals and the environment groups. This is just a group to share information about where poison is to help protect our pets. I am happy to work with anyone, I just thought facebook and e-mailing is a fast way to get the information out there. There is another more political campaign being set up, I have talked to them and have shared all my horrific photos. So there will be something bigger happening. Watch this space.

My Facebook page and e-mailing group is not a political campaign it is just a way to share information about where poison is to protect our pets. My dog was poisoned (survived) so I understand how devastating this is for peope. I know that I alone can not do much but if I can save one dog that is worth it. I agree we should all work together and I have been in contact with the person setting up STOP, that is still happening but they are getting everything in place before they launch. I have sent them my horrific photos etc. So watch this space.

I think this is a great idea, every little bits helps. I lost my doggie two weeks ago because of poison and it is awful. We went and spoke to Zoe in the muhtars office in Ozankoy and asked if there was anything the muhtar could do about this horrible situation. She kindly spoke to him and arranged a poster stating that anyone caught dropping poision in his area, can be prosecuted. I know it is only something small, but hopefully it could make people aware

Little 1 so sorry to hear about your dog, makes me so sad. Where exactly were you in Ozankoy when he/she was poisoned, did you see the poison, how was it laid out (on some meat etc), was it picked up? Just trying to collect information, so that people know what to look for, because if it has been laid once probably likely to be laid again.

Unfortunately Mymun could jump the 6ft fence (the little escape artist) so was we do not exactly know where he ate the poison, but we found him near the construction workers living area below Tropricana, I don't think it was the workers as they also have doggies. It is very sad and I know that 5 other dogs died around the same day in that area. Every little helps and I think you and Kar are doing a great job making more people aware.

If there is anything we can do, just let us know.

Great initiative so we can all see what to look out for. I am horrified that a lovely walk can end in the death of a dog and even more worrying a child could easily also touch this meat laced with poison!!!

Tilley please will you post a picture of your dog and maybe the story of what happened on the Facebook page, I think it is very important to acknowledge all the pets that have suffered. I am going to set up a memorial album on Facebook. So if you know of anyone else who has lost a pet either get them to post a picture or they can e-mail the picture to me at petsagainstpoison11@gmail.com.

Our pup was also poisoned and died a miserable death - but unless and until someone has some idea of who is doing this, all the twitter and facebook and whatever else blogs one dedicates to this ghastly cruel sad problem...........won't reach the perpetrators, so will fall on deaf ears

Well done for setting this up, which is more than Tom Roche promised to do. We at k9 fully support you and will help in any way we can. It really does need some prosecutions before this will stop. Heavy fines for anyone found poisoning. A reward for information leading to a prosecution would help too. Wish we had the funds to do this as we would have no qualms about it. Even though we are not citizens we still have a right to defend wrongdoing. We need more Cypriots to participate. Come on people of North Cyprus, stop this awful practice and make this a decent place for people and animals to live in harmony.

I have been in touch with Tom Roche who has been very supportive, please be aware he is setting up a campaign group called STOP. It has to be registered with a governmental dept and so they are going through this process at the moment, as we can all appreciate nothing is easy here. I want to reiterate my facebook page and email group is not political, it is just trying to make people aware of where poison is, what it looks like and also to share peoples stories of poisoning.

What a good idea this is for you to collate the e mail addresses of all those interrested so that they can be forwarned if poisen has been laid in a particular area. Your central e mail address should be kept by all participants so that when/if you are informed, you can pass on the details to the rest of us.

Thank you.:- lee.gerard@ymail.com

Msg 25 and 26, yes, it was poisoned meat, picked up at Alsancak - she was desperately ill and couldn't be saved - we will NEVER have another dog in TRNC - ever - it was the most distressing thing for my daughter (it was her pup) to witness.

Msg 21. You know for a 100% fact it is ONLY Turkish Cypriots poisoning the dogs? If not, I don't think it fair you should malign them only - we all know plenty of people don't like any animal, or don't like dogs barking, or are afraid of the packs of feral animals.............just saying.....

i am new to the island and quite frankly appalled by the lack of compassion for dogs and in particular a puppy i decided to adopt and then found poisoned! i really want something done about this babaric behaviour, what can be done to stop these mindless people of casting poison around villages in particular.. can we also perhaps mention children as they can also come into contact with this leathal poison that is so easily shrewn about...can anybody help..i for one cant stand around while this going on,certainly a huge lack of education on many parts should bew addressed` i mentioned children because that might be the only way of getting some serious attention oppossed to dogs..as they dont have much respect for`so its an option that might work and there has to be some truth in it! i would love to hear from anybody on this and i also need the guidance on this site as i am new here.

Unfortunately lamek it has been a big problem for many many years and although KAR and others have tried to highlight the problem, it seems to have fallen on deaf ears. There is a new campaign called STOP, which Tom Roche is setting up, but it is taking time because it has to be registered with a governmental department and as you can imagine that is not easy. It is really important that as many Turkish Cypriots get involved as possible because I am not sure that the ex-pat community will truly be listened to. It is important to get local environmental groups involved etc. When the STOP campaign is set up Tom would really appreciate support from you lamek. I have set up a Facebook page, so that we can keep people aware of where poison is found and for people to share their stories and honour all those animals that have died in such a cruel way. If you are on Facebook you can join the page Pets Against Poison, we will keep everyone updated with the STOP campaign.
