| Turkey's first Islamist prime minister, Necmettin Erbakan, has died at the age of 85, one of his aides has said. Necmettin Erbakan served only a year as prime minister before he was forced to stand down in 1997 by Turkey's staunchly secular military. His Islamist Welfare Party was banned in 1998, while Mr Erbakan was barred from politics for five years for violating the constitution. The governing AK Party, which has Islamist roots, grew out of Welfare BBC |

| He was a very interesting character. He studied Mechanical engineering at Istanbul University and eventually became a professor of Mechanical engineering. He represented the smaller party in the coalition in 1974 and served as vice PM. He gave Ecevit a very hartd time during the 1974 "Peace Operation" or call it what you like. Whenever Ecevit agreed to a cease fire, he ordered the army to proceed. Perhaps that suited Ecevit as well, you never know. He has been the figure head of Selamet Party but obviously he was too old to lead. I expect this party now to disappear into history books. ismet |
