apart from during the period 2003-2009 UBP, as is the case now, was in power. They therefore created this situation and now it has come to haunt them. How do you drastically cut voters' wages and pensions and expect them to vote for you at the next elections?

"How do you drastically cut voters' wages and pensions and expect them to vote for you at the next elections?" You don't. You put up local taxes so that the private sector picks up the tab whilst telling Turkey you have reduced the amount of subsidy spent on the public sector.

... and watch as the implosion of the private sector continues speedily to worsen... We closed our betting shop (the third oldest in Cyprus) this year when the Government increased the monthly direct tax they wanted from approx TL2,500/month to over TL32,000/month - irrespective of actual turnover or revenue (substantially less than the tax wanted!). Result: no tax whatsoever, 6 persons unemployed, no sosyal sigorta or pension fund, no daily expenses giving KDV. 40 other shops closed around the same time.

What a dreadful state of affairs.... We surely don't expect civil servants to suffer when there are lots of private sector workers/companies to take the strain?

Gordon You have summed it up perfectly. Small wonder the country is in its' current state with decisions like that being made. Are the politicians that short sighted or is it protect votes at all costs ? The mind boggles !!!!! Paul

Government here over time just like Blair/Brown government in UK - not fit for purpose Brown and Co created 800,000 public sector jobs (many of them non-jobs) plus mass immigration facilitated to ensure voted back in 3 times by people with vested interest Just the same here - it needs a very strong politician to stand up to the Unions and entrenched positions...
