published in the Cyprus mail THE EU is ready to invest €4 million in a solar energy project in the north as part of its aid programme for the Turkish Cypriot community. The European Commission has started a project to build a pilot solar power plant for the Turkish Cypriot community that will deliver electricity to the grid in 2009. Experts are currently preparing a concept study to determine the best location and most efficient method of exploiting sunlight to produce electrical energy in the north. The pilot power plant, which will generate a maximum 1MW of electricity, should be up and running by summer 2009, and is expected to produce over 1.5 million kWh per year. The energy experts will discuss the opportunities and technologies available for Cyprus in renewable energies this Thursday at the EU Programme Support Office, 38-44 Kyrenia Avenue in Nicosia at 9am. The two topics presented will be ‘The Global Energy (R)evolution’ and ‘Solar Power Generation - State of the Art and Prospects for Cyprus’.Both presentations will be followed by an open discussion. The event is open to all interested parties, subject to seating availability.

Not a techie but from Wikipedia: The kilowatt hour is a convenient unit for electrical bills because the energy usage of a typical electrical customer in one month is several hundred kilowatt hours. so how that works out is a length of a piece of string question. That said if the TRNC govt allowed householders to sell back excess electricity to the grid then we could all have solar panels on the roof and....

I heard about this issue about 2 years ago when I was at the EU office talking about the karpaz issue, by then the sum was 5 million euros but you know, the marked situation etc.. prob they needed one million for special people.. Anyhow: 1.5 million kWs is 1500MWs. TRNC demands per day 2600MWs. But if the pv plant is set to 1MWp this will produce 6-7MWs per day. Per year this will sum up to 2500MWs. 1000MWs more. Lets hope that they give a TRNC company the tender he he..

I am not sure if this would be the case with EU cash. I would expect the EU to monitor the spend very carefully. The TRNC would need to provide an audit trail. Does anyone know if this is fresh funds or is it part of the money the EU promised after the Annan plan?

Great news! Its the way to go...the amount of sunlight Cyprus gets it makes perfect sense to invest in Solar! Im sure the President Mr Talat is keen to promote this as he has a degree in Electrical engineering....! The North within 5 years could be Green and energy efficient! nunu

Nunu I had no idea that President Talat has an electrical engineering degree. It would be great if NC could tap the full potentail of the sun. Did anyone watch the climate change programme on BBC2 Sunday night? I have for a long time had an interest in reinforcing and balancing feedback loops. I have found it to be a good way to understand problems and how nature works (not that I have a good understanding of how it all works). Most of the climate models are built on linear models and have predicted a slow and steady warming of the earths temperature. It is now believed that the earths temperature could increase extremely rapidly, dramatic changes could happen in yeras rather than decades. This would be the case if you have reinforcing feedback without any balancing feedback. I hope the two presidents have climate change on their agenda. It may not seem as important as power sharing etc at the moment, but it might prove to be just as important.

Jimmy G, I can see your point..........But we must think positive! The old fossil fuel power stations are PAST their sick by date!....with the volatile costs/fluctuation in oil it does not make sense to keep these uneconomical power stations going......throwing good money after bad is a waste of time. My feeling is part of the revenue made on the high electrical charges in the North are being put aside for investment into new power stations. Hopefully it will go towards no doubt a subsidised Solar energy plant. nunu

IloveCyprus....Yes Mr Talat is a very smart Man! The right Man for the job...just hope he stays in power for many years to come...He is a highly respected Politition very logical.......Most Engineers do have good foresight and understanding of the workings of many things in life! Once a workable solution has been agreed by all parties I honestly believe TRNC will prosper and flourish and will be one of the top places in the World to live! That is my prediction.................99.99% of my predictions normally happen! nunu

Nunu, I agree entirely with the sentiments you have expressed and would love to see this proposal become reality and despite newlad thinking that my head is buried in the sand..... it's not .....and we should all support environmentally friendly initiatives......and I do. Unfortunately, my cynicism/negativity is borne out of 30+ year's experience & frustration at the TRNC government's failure to tackle and resolve many of the problems that still exist..... let alone embrace a new initiative such as this. I sincerely hope that I'm wrong as it's incumbent on all responsible governments to tackle climate change. The pilot plant should be up and running by the summer of 2009 - I wonder if the Girne by pass might be finished by then too?

IloveCyprus and Jimmy G, yes its the Irish Optimist in me! Jimmy G, I think the GC have a lot to answer for over the past 30 years as most of the talks have been boycotted by them.........At last they appear to have a sensible positive person (Christianos) that wants to come to a solution. Once they do......it will open up a whole load of opportunities in trade, tourism, commercial etc business between the North and the South. TRNC does not have the full infrastructure yet, but once a solution has been found I believe Talat will then be able to focus on developing the TRNC properly....investment from all angles will then come! TRNC may one day export/sell solar powered electricity to the South of Cyprus!! nunu

Nunu: "I think the GC have a lot to answer for over the past 30 years as most of the talks have been boycotted by them." I'm no fan of previous GC administrations, esp. Kyprianou, but is it really fair to say that? I think the final analysis, summed up very well by UK diplomat and Cyprus envoy David Hannay, was that Denktas was one of the biggest obstacles to settlement, constantly entering into negotiations in bad faith.

Nunu, love your optimism and hope that your Utopian vision does become a reality but sadly I can't see an agreement to a solution being reached.

PtePike & JimmyG, Whatever has gone on with the talks/solutions in the past.........is in the past. The fact that South Cyprus are now fully in the EU means they have to tow the line and comply. Turkey are trying to clean their act up to qualify into the EU (It will happen, the Queen has rubber stamped it on Her visit there) AND not forgetting the UN and the Kofi Annan treaty.....All parties have to stop messing around and get on with the job and find a workable solution.......most people are fed up with it dragging on and on. Positive thinking! TRNC are sandwiched in the middle of the whole Political issues hence Im confident the Leaders will sort it out before the year is out. Back to the topic....Solar! Let the sun shine! nunu nunu

Nunu perhaps, God willing that we're both still here, we could touch base in January 2009 when we'll know for certain whether or not your optimism/confidence was misplaced with regards to a settlement being reached ? By then too the solar plant may be under construction and on target for completion by the summer and we'll all be happy..... but in the meantime do you know any Irishmen who could finish off the Girne by pass?

ilc, nunu, jimmyg, Great topic of conversation guys with some very interesting points brought forward.Solar power has to be the way forward. Why waste the natural resource of the sun when it is staring at you most days of the year.Lets hope n.c. carry this on and people follow in their foot steps. God knows what we are going to do about the bloody by-pass though. Mark, Good to see you posting again, Best Regards, Paul.
