Most AC Cobras are kit car copies,Most have Rover V8 Engines,a genuine AC Cobra has a Ford 4.6 V8 and is twice/thrice the price of the copy. And at 15 MPG hardly practical,or environmentally friendly

Message 9, yes most Cobras are kits - and most of them built to a very high standard, a lot with the Ford V8.

Yes of course they don't do many miles to the gallon, but when you are driving one...who cares?

Environmentally friendly.....don't even go there....

Message 10 you missed one comment.........that they are fun..........

Absolutely awesome cars...

Back in the 60's, I had a 'blast' in a Shelby 7 litre Cobra - Halibrand wheels - the job lot!

What can you say......... ?

'Ah sh1t - the road's full of little cars coming at me backwards!'

About 10 years ago, I helped my friend [a North Yorkshire farmer] build a 'Spartan' kit car [shoehorned in a Triumph 2.5PI!], then next project was a Cobra [the name of the kit manufacturer escapes me for the moment] - bugger the old Rover 'donk', we fitted ours with a short-block Chevvy for real 'grunt'!

Re. msg 19: Ah, just remembered the Cobra kit manufacturer - 'Pilgrim', I think. We had to graft on a lot of gussets to strengthen the bodyshell - it was 'flimsy as', as was!

The ccobras here are copies and ther were a few good remakes of the original that were very expensive and made almost exactly as the shelbys kraft being one. They were however very expensive a friend of mine has an original and has had it since new just covered 23000 miles.

Ref post #9

quote ".....a genuine AC Cobra has a Ford 4.6 V8......" unquote

They came from the factory with either a 289cid (4,735cc) or a 427cid (6,996cc) ohv V8.

Genuine ones are silly money; many good quality replica cars around, and not so good copies based on Ford Sierra floorpan and running gear (!) and the like.

Agree with the sentiment about not giving a stuff if they are politically correct or not.

msg24..6,996cc .All those cc's to get 310 horse power.By today's standards positively stone-age technology... "Brute force and ignorance"......amazing the leap forward in engine design.eg: Audi RS2, 2,200cc 315hp...0-60 5.4sec Top speed 164 mph....And it's an "Estate" ............But the cobra made more noise

Ya need a coupla three sacks of sand, or cement, to keep the rear end down on Cobras - they're more lethal than TR2 - 3A in the wet!

Wouldn't you agree, 'martin'?

And you're not referring to 'Furry Dice', either, I guess!

Incidentally, the Cobra was derived [most say: 'Cribbed!'] from the AC Bristol, which only had a 2.2 litre motor - beautifully engineered, though, with an all aluminium body.

Has anyone spotted a Bristol 'Brigand' anywhere in Cyprus? - A pukka gentleman's 'horseless carriage' - jolly fact!

ttoli/Msg 38: You are quite correct - it was the AC 'Ace' - I think it was the engine that was Bristol.... ?

Since this thread is about 'Cobras', let's hope there's still more input from forum members to come!

Skurry, en route to the ownership of a Cobra for all the envisaged TRNC club members why not big it up , stay out of bars, and together take on the sober task of building a car with a Rolls Royce Spitfire Merlin engine and Rolls Royce grill and logos. That should p.ss off the Germans and beat the TRNC speed cameras as in the 1960s. With the money saved, and whilst the build in progress, you could all drive around the TRNC in TVRs. Not yet the beloved Cobra but for relatively little money you would have the same straight line grunt, along with hairy handling, ridiculous fuel consumption, total unreliability, and no street cred whatsoever !

The car was called the Beast and built by John Dodds, I have some photos of Me next to it in the early 70's

which I'll post (Once I know how).

I used to have woodwork evening classes with an AC Cars upholsterer... so he invited me to an industrial estate where Brooklands used to be for a spin....

Went like stink! It was being built for some pop star but damned if I can remember who... might have been Rod Stewart.

Our lecturer was a bloke called Ken Obee who we all called Obi-Wan, and spoke to him like Yoda ...

'why he did not know...' As it happens, speaking like Yoda comes in very handy for formulating Turkish sentences...

Specs for the Ford 427 here:-

http://www.carmemories.com/cgi-bin/viewexperience.cgi?experience_id=133

and a quote from wiki- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_FE_engine

The Cobra's FE 427 produced almost 500 horsepower (370 kW) and attained top speeds of over 180 mph....

It's not so much the horsepower anyway, it's the torque. A 7-litre V8 will produce more than 350 ft-lbs of torque just at idle speed. With this much grunt in such a light car it would shame most modern super-saloons for acceleration ability.
