Moreover, certain isolated criminal incidents involving Turkish immigrants, such as fights between neighbours, or in one case someone trying to marry a Turkish- Cypriot girl before divorcing his first wife, also caused anger among the secular Turkish Cypriots. The late Turkish-Cypriot leader Dr. Faz›l Küçük wrote a series of articles in 1978 criticising the “immoral behaviour” of the settlers. He said that they should all be sent back (the ones from the East) because they were not “civilised” enough to stay in Cyprus:

Thank you Tracer. A very interesting article and will help non TC's to understand the recent anti-Turkey demonstrations. Very reminiscent of the UK in 1960's and Enoch Powells Rivers of Blood speech. Fear of immigration and dilution of the homeland culture is common throughout the world, and not one that has been completely successful in any country.

Err no they don't

The numbers of imigrants in the UK as a proportion to the whole population is nothing like the position in North Cyprus. This years census will make interesting reading but at the last the numbers were relatively small.

RE msg 3, Lilli: (...) Enochs words now ring so true x (...)

▶ Lilly, think thrice. You don't want to live in the UK now - would you like to live there when blood runs in the streets?

Depends Harold on whether you consider the influx of EU citizens as immigration, and whether illegal immigrants complete the census. The mistake made by the previous government was to promote multiculturalism. Cultural diversity within a single culture of Britishness would have been a much better aim.

The make up of the South East of England population has changed dramatically since the last census. The ethnic make up of the London Boroughs in particular, there are areas where the indigenous population are now the ethnic minority.

Even in the 2001 census 45% of all the non white population of the UK lived in London. It is misleading to use London as a typical example of the UK

An unsurprising account with a subjective view on certain matters. In the recent school attacks on foreign students by GC students, The GCs have publicly stated the increasing xenophobia in their society and as reported in the press, the GC church continues to preach intollerance.

Msg.10: The relevance of these societal trends and realms informing younger people can't be dismissed so lightly.

The symptoms are nothing (apart from the sad loss of those GC kids' sense of reality) and Msg.10 betrays a lack of awareness of the root cause of what is a much bigger problem:

The report being peddled here could have made a more balanced statement by referring to (a) sources of xenophopic tendency and (b) the fact that it is not a unique trend limited to NC.

It could also have avoided subjective perspectives such as the TCs being "unable to wean themselves from the Turkish army" by reflecting on the reasons why there would still be a concern over the aspirations of the GC community over Cyprus as a whole.

This is a vain thread title if ever.

Certainly the 'Multi-Culturalism' approach taken in the UK in recent years has back-fired. Racism is a flag waved far too often in this country; along with all the other 'isms' and '...phobics'. People should be allowed to disagree with something and not made to feel awkward for voicing an opinion which is what happens at the moment. The English way of life should come first and our 'guests' should fit around us, just as ex-pats have to do in Cyprus.

Enoch Powell did have a point... which, just as now, was ignored. There are many people that would want to remove a lot of the immigrants from the UK, especially those that do not bring anything positive and just take from the pot that they have never put anything into. In relation to NC then feelings run in a similar vane I guess; if the new people do not fit in then it will lead to negative feelings and eventually actions. Hardly surprising is it.
