Lilaclady give it a try for at least 2 years, by that time the holiday syndrome should have passed then reality should start to set in, then make your mind up. Good luck

Advice? Don't lose your links with the UK. Rent don't buy. It's cold in the winter months so bring an electric blanket.

lilaclady, I have been here for three years now and love every minuet of it. You will always get the doom and gloom merchants who will try to tell you that all is bad here. But do as you say, come out and rent, see if you like the life out here and then make your decision. Only you will know if this is the place you want to put down roots.

My problem with renting is that there are very many places in the World to rent with less hassel and comparable rental prices and properties, why rent here? Buying prices are the lure here, nothing else, truth be known. If you can't buy where is the motivation.

Why promote renting then vonny when people come here asking advice about buying, why would anyone rent in a country that doesn't want you?

Roomy thank you, you have kicked me into touch. I love the house we are now in but I could do that in Tialand or elsewhere cheaper. You get brainlocked here because of the beauty of the island. you over see the animal situation, the rubbish that affects our health the dust and dirt. To top it all to try to make a living. I know the majority do not have to worry about that but we do. Thank you for the insperation xxxx

i lived in north cyprus for n8 months and loved every minute of it, we had to return home becaause my 15 year old son could not settle, from that aspect im glad i did, as at 18 he holds an hgv 1 class certificate and his whole aim is to move to the USA and live, which i am sure he will achieve as he is a very determined young man. Personally i miss the TRNC every day and cannot wait to return, as is till have my property there. I just love everything about it, i have travelled widely in my life and the TRNC does it for me, the only other place i would live is the USA. Try it im sure you will fall in love with it, the only downfall for me is the way they treat animals but it is there country and who am i to interfere, i just helped wherever i could.

vonny, that is not the question I asked, I know there are lots of happy people here, all i have ever asked is how do you go about it, people like you who are seemingly happy either can't or won't answer me, instead you have decided to attack me at all opportunity, see other posts.Other more honest members here still adhere to the truth Now either ignore me (if you can) or I will play you at your own childish game unless of course Admin here decides who is right or wrong based on post count and other bias? Either way, I don't care because you will still be tied up in your own little dream World and the real World will still be my oyster.

I am happy to report that I have lived here for 6/7 years and although I had difficulties with my builder and had numerous other niggling problems when I first arrived, they have all gone away and life here is fantastic. I didn't rent first as there was a small-holding on the land I bought, so I was able to develop that and live in it whilst my villa was being built. This proved invaluable as had I NOT been living in the small house, I would not have been able to stop some of the horrendous building practices that would have been camouflaged, if I had not been on the site. Life here is wonderful. Gerry

Hi lilaclady, you say you are going to rent so you obviously have your eyes open. Come and give it a whirl, do all the positive things the other posts advise, we have had a multitude of problems but are still here and apart from those problems have enjoyed it. Clearly not everybody's cup of tea. We intend to give it till the end of this year when we will have been here 6 years. Love the ordinary TC's, the Turks and the majority of the expats. A great learning curve. Never burn you bridges though.

Message 37 Lilac Lady So you have not been to the north yet? I am sure you will love it. You say you want to rent for one year? I would suggest you first of all have a good look around all of northern cyprus before deciding where to rent and then rent for a shorter period of time so you have the flexibility to live in the different areas. Say a 3 month rent each time? And yes, the forum can be useful but there are those who are very negative!! Good luck to you, I have lived in the south as well as most areas in the north so if you need any advice or help let me know.

Lilaclady: it's true that if you read the posts on here you will find the unhappy outnumber the happy. But ask yourself, who are the loudest? those with something to complain about or the majority. It's like the old SMASH advert "perfect mashed potatoes rarely draw comment" Mebbe us happy majority should make more noise. There's problems here, for sure there are, but imho they are far outweighed by the benefits. And the climate and luvverly people outweigh them even more. Don't expect to get out more than you are prepared to put in and you'll be ok.

Hi so there are a mixed bag of opinions on Cyprus. For those who don't like it, why are you still living there? For those who do like it, is it getting better as the years move on? We are looking to rent our property out in the UK and rent in Kyrenia for 6 months to get use to living there. We are in our mid 40's and have a 15 year old son and a 23 daughter who are both coming with us, I would value some feedback on whether this is a good move. I am a qualified dog Groomer, and a qualified Nursery Nurse, I would also be interested in looking after and maintaining villas for the Brits etc. Our daughter would like to train to be a wedding planner. Thank you

Isn't the 15-year-old at a crucial stage in his education and development? The exams he should be taking over the next two years could shape the rest of his life. To be uprooted and brought to a place like TRNC on a parent's whim is highly likely to make him lonely, miserable and bored to tears. Sorry to sound harsh, but if you need to ask the kind of questions in your post it suggests you have not done adequate research and know very little about Cyprus. I'm speaking as a father who's been around the block and would always put the interests of my children first.

Hi zoots thanks for your opinion, it's appreciated even if slightly presumptious. My son doesn't get on at school here anyway, if you are not at the top of the class and need a push they leave you to get on with it! You either like school and will work hard, learn and study, or you don't. We moved our daughter away when she was 15 from Milton Keynes to the South and she went on to get 10 GCSE's which she certainly didn't stand a chance if we had stayed where we were. I am putting my children first I have researched the school, and I have been told that the school in Kyrenia has a very good reputation. We have been to Cyprus on numerous occassions and married there in 2001, but until now it hasn't been possible for us to make the move. I am coming over next week to do some more research and we will only take the plunge when we are certain, but both my kids want to move there. England has it's problems too you know i think some people in cyprus forget we are all in a recession

Hoylemiller - oh, I don't know - there's always the good old UK. They seem to welcome pretty much everyone with open arms and you certainly don't need to have a substantial amount of cash. The government will give it to you, one way or another Bill, message 47 - agree.

The UK is the best country in the world for a myriad of reasons and is rated highly internationally. Strange that some people who no longer live there like to knock it, but I suppose with age comes crankiness (and not a little xenophobia. ;)
