hi Roley, look at the cost of a ferry from Piraeus to Limasol to cut out all the hassle of driving through greece and the dreaded trunk roads in Turkey

Hi Roley - we are leaving on 26 April from Scotland. Ferry Newcastle/Amsterdam, then drive through Netherlands, Germany, Austria and into Italy for ferry from Ancona to Greece. Accompanying us are our 2 dogs and a cat so it should be an interesting trip! We have pre-booked suitable accommodation (we hope) and even have a pet cabin for the Italy/Greece ferry. In process of trying to arrange insurance for TRNC (and possibly Turkey) before we leave to cut down on time and paperwork at borders. Plan to take about 10 days. Pity you were not leaving earlier or we could have met somewhere en route.

Hi gavangie, we are hopping to make the journey at the start of May all being well, and will be driving from UK through Belgium, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Bulgaria, Turkey and the ferry to TRNC. We too are taking our 2 cats with us. We have had all the cats vaccinations done and should be picking up thier passports ports this Monday, then only the export and import licence's to arrange and we can get underway. It's the cats doc's that have taken all time. How did you manage it all with 2 dogs and 1 cat?

First of all there is no ferry from Athens to Limassol stopped in 1974.

Turkish roads are fine just try and aviod Istanbul-all crazy motorists.

Kust check on the ferry from Ancona to Cesme this cuts out all of Greece and Istanbul.

The ferry from Tasacu to Kyrenia is to say the least interesting.

Enjoy your trip.

Hi Hippo. Our first choice was ferry Ancona/Cesme but this only runs for a few months in summer which is too late for us. Not particularly looking forward to Tasacu/Girne ferry but needs must.

Dap - not easy to arrange documents with all the animals, particularly as Turkey only allows 2 per person, but think we have it all organised and just awaiting import licence from TRNC. Export licences go direct to our vet and final health check for animals arranged for the day we leave when export certificate is signed off by vet. Then rush to ferry in Newcastle. Ah, the joys!

Regarding previous comments about ferries from Greece (Athens/Piraeus) to Limassol, Cyprus. We did this route 5 years ago. The company was called Salamis. The boat takes about 30 hours. It is called "Maria G".

There are two problems, but they can be overcome.

Firstly, the boat is designed to carry cars, not passengers. It ships the cars from Piraeus to Haifa via Limassol and then back again. They will carry passengers, but you will be treated one level above the crew! There are no casinos, shops, etc. You eat well and with the crew.

Secondly, if you intend to keep your vehicle in the TRNC, the ROC will try and make you "export" it through a legitimate port, ie. Limassol, not Metehan/Pile, etc.

Good luck.

Reading this post reminded me of a holiday we had in 1971, we drove to from UK to Istanbul. I think it was from Ostend and it seemed to be one straight road in fact I think there was a sign in Ostend saying Istanbul in those days it was the old Yugoslavia. We had a MG sportscar. On our return journey I think it cost us £17.50 or somewhere around that mark for petrol. Was not long after that petrol went up and up. Great holiday.

Ref Post 11 Wattys.

I've done this journey through Europe and Turkey a few times in 3 litre vehicles at a steady plod where the speed limits allow and fuel and travel expenses came to around 500 quid.(3 overnight stops.) A tip you may wish to consider, I filled a cool box with fruit, cold meats and some salad gear for lunches and day time snacks. It saved queueing and delays at the service areas. Good luck, it really is an interesting journey with a lot of contrasts the closer you get to Turkey.

John

We drove out in 2007, and made a holiday of the journey. Took Eurotunnel and drove through France, crossing the border into Germany & stopped at Baden Baden (Holiday Inn). Excellent hotel & good rates in a lovely town. Plan was to avoid Switzerland where you have to pay a full years road tax, so we left Baden Baden on the Stutgart road, and turned south towards Kempton. We travelled over the Alps (rather than tunnel) and came out at Innsbruck. You have to pay a month's road tax to travel through Austria (a few euros), and we headed for the Dolomites in North Italy where we stopped in another excellent Holiday Inn. Travelled south through Italy, and joined our ferry at Ancona. 2 nights on the ferry travelling through the Corinth Canal, and got off the ferry at Cesme. Took the motorway towards Aydin, and found a hotel at Side. Last leg was along the south coast before we got on the ferry to Girne at Tasouco. The Ferry ride was the only glitch in the whole journey, as it was packe

due to the previous 3 ferries being cancelled due to high winds. fully recommend driving to TRNC as long as you don't race and enjoy each country. Weirdest thing on the journey was seeing a McDonalds high up in the Alps, they build them everywhere!

Best of luck
