I am re-painting the internal walls of my villa using the silicone emulsion available from most DIY shops here. When painting the walls several areas of the original paint pulls off from the wall onto the roller whilst applying the new paint, has anyone else experienced this probelm and how did you overcome it. Many Thanks in advance. Sparky Mike

Don't think PVA will solve the problem. It's water based and as soon as you put another coat of emulsion (water based) on it it will revert back to it's liquid state offering you no help at all. A lot of people (including pro's) make this mistake especially in wet areas like bathrooms. What probably happened is the original 1st coat of paint was put on neat when it should have been a 'mist' coat i,e watered down. It never bonded correctly to the plaster and now when you 'wet' it again it's just peeling off in lumps on the roller. It's a common problem. Only 'real' fix is to remove the loose with a scraper (you'll know whats loose as it will basically fall off) lightly rub with sand paper and then 'mist' coat. Sometimes better to remove the lot on a whole wall as it's a pain to cover patches! If the paint is good quality then a 50% mix may do, if it's cheap rubbish then 10-20% water will do, check with supplier 1st about thinning. Then base coat (slightly lower % mix, then top coat neat

Hi Mike, We must not forget that even though wall paint is a water based product, it is still a chemical product and it goes into reaction within each other. Paint already applied on your wall must be weaker quality than the one you recently purchased, so that is why it is taking off what is currently on there. Solution is you either scrap the old one off or you can apply a sealer on the old paint and then apply the new one. We sell at our GENC DIY shop in Karaoglanoglu, Kyrenia german origin Düfa paint and sealer products. Good luck..

Hello Mike PVA will not work. SET that can be bought from Marshalls will help. It won,t cure your problem as the problem starts, in my case anyway, with no damp course to start with. If its a major problem and on outside walls you will need to take up 2 tiles on the outside, dig down atleast 8" and apply a barrier of water proofing. Danny Bishop has done this for us and it is the answer.

the only way is to use a product called trymetal fix it is not water based and you can buy this from marshalls i would think you are in karshiaka as this is the area i have had alot of this you must allow it to dry for at least 24 hrs that should cure the problem if not there is no cure

Had the same problem when I did mine last year. I got some Polycell 3in1 Problem Wall Primer from Marshalls. Worked a treat!

msg4 Is correct,,,The "Virgin" plaster was not "Sized" with a thin absorbent coat first, resulting in little or no bonding of the paint...Only way to fix it is to remove and repaint using 20% water in the base coat, Sorry It's yet another Cyprus Problem

Did you get it sorted? If yes, how did you finally manage it? Might help others with same problem.
