Snakes are just as frightened of people, probably more so! More snakes die from savage attack by people, than people die from snake bites. The Blunt Nosed Viper is very poisonous but the main problem is that they are deaf and for this reason they don't get out of the way like most other snakes do. When walking in the mountains, great care is needed to avoid stepping on one of hese beautiful creatures. The Blunt Nosed vipe is a protected species and should not be killed under any circumstances. People who kill these animals could risk prosecution. As Martin D41 says treat them with respect.

Rightly or wrongly my gardener killed the snake before I even knew of it's existence. I have however since looked it up and it was indeed the Blunt Nosed Viper and I am so gald he found it before I did: Vipera lebetina - The blunt nosed viper This is the most venemous snake in Europe. The blunt nosed viper can be found in Cyprus, Turkey and Lebanon. 99% of cypriots will either try to kill it or run for their lives ! It has unfortunately been the reason for a number of deaths or near-deaths so people are not keen to love them. They are also hated by hunters as they will frequently bite their hunting dogs. I nam not condoning his actions but my gardener and his family run a small sheep and goat farm at the end of the track to my house so I guess that would justify his actions because doubtless they could loose a few animals to this snake.

Lilli and hollylou, snakes here do not seek out people to bite ,unlike Anacondas, and Pythons found in South America....etc if you start people panicking about a creature that "might remotely" do them harm you are putting the creature at risk because of unfounded hysteria.....That,s why millions of Great White Sharks were "MURDERED" after the film Jaws.... If I were worried about anything here it would be contracting "Sand Fly Fever",because you are far more likely to be infected and Hospitalised by that than be bitten by a Snake.......Get things into perspective,Mozzies & Sandflies do you far more harm!!!!! Leave them alone!! Lilli you either love "all" animals or you don't .. I REALLY CAN'T BELIEVE YOU POST ...

Two much loved cats have died in my garden in the last 6 years as a result of snake bites. I have removed others in this time and as much as I worry for our remaining pets I would not kill a snake.

You just have to try and think of yourself as privileged if you get to see one of these creatures... as people have said, most animals - not just snakes, are far more scared of you, than you are of them. So many animals are becoming endangered because of ignorance and fear - we have to remember - they were here first!! It's such a shame that people find them so scary but it is so common - I think your comments are a little harsh, Martin - people can't usually help the phobias they have - it is usually just something passed on through generations. I love animals - all animals- but that doesn't mean that some wouldn't scare the living S**t out of me if I were face to face with them!! I simply have a acute awareness of my own mortality!!! ;) Anyway people - keep your eyes open and, blimey, take a photo if you do see one and post them on here!!

martinD41...............in my "myopic" opinion you can certainly love some animals and not all, just like you can love some human beings and not all...............some animals just do not come across as being very lovable at all and snakes I am afraid are one.......................

It is totally illegal to kill snakes. There is a big fine for doing so. Take care when working in your garden and make sure you don't harm the snakes that live there. Nothing wrong with encouraging them to leave but attempting to kill them is likely to get you bitten. And serve you right if you do too.

Martin Im sorry if I came across as hating them, I dont Im just scared of them but would never harm them. I havent been that close to one to know how the feel to touch. I do not like spiders but if I get one I take it outside. To free it. God I had enough grief when I discovered mouse dropping to try to find the little blighter so I could free it. I have had sandfly fever and never want it again. Im sorry if I offended you.

shrimp,msg..11..remember one thing in your myopic life, We are all Animals, just think of what human life consists of ,,Birth ,Urination, Defecation, Procreation. Death...the only difference is that we call ourselves (mainly through religion) the superior race.In the words of Sir David Attenbourough we are simply the "APE" that got lucky
